This is Bob Dorough. You may or may not know the name. Bob is the composer and performer of the #schoolhouserock songs. 2 years ago, I saw an email about a juried photo exhibit at city hall about Philly’s live jazz. I decided that I’d go out and shoot to submit. I mean there’s no losing - if one of my images aren’t selected then I still went out and got to experience live jazz and shoot or any way I wanted. I picked a night that I was free and hit two spots. First up was @southjazzkitchen on Broad. I had no idea who’d be playing - I wasn’t steeped in that world so I likely wouldn’t have known and my goal wasn’t to shoot big names. I get to South and start shooting. The guitarist was my main focus bc he was front and his guitar looked cool and I was there to create interesting art plus due to logistics, I didn’t have a great face shot of the pianist. At this point, I still had no idea who the hell they were. About half way in, the pianist starts talking then it hit me that I was experiencing something special.
