New Sidewalk Seating Area to Enliven Stretch of Southport

Just in time for summer, a new sidewalk seating area funded by Special Service Area (SSA) 27 will soon arrive on the Southport Corridor outside Sheil Park. Consisting of modern benches, landscaping elements, and a sidewalk art motif, the new public space will provide seating for pedestrians while creating a new neighborhood focal point that will encourage people to explore shopping, dining and entertainment options along the bustling Lakeview street.

The idea of activating this stretch of Southport dates back to the 2011 Lakeview Area Master Plan, which also called for enhancements to the facade of the Sheil Park fieldhouse to help increase pedestrian activity on the block. As part of SSA 27′s plans to install a sidewalk seating area at this site, the SSA Commission selected local artist George Berlin to bring the windows of the Chicago Park District building to life with colorful illustrations depicting many of the activities that take place inside. SSA 27 will eventually offer free public WiFi within this public space, inviting pedestrians and visitors to Sheil Park to browse the Internet while enjoying everything the neighborhood has to offer.

The sidewalk seating area and accompanying window mural will be installed next month. It was designed by site design group, ltd., a Chicago-based landscape architecture, urban design, and architecture firm, with input and support from 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney and the Chicago Park District.
