The Free From Food Review

After last weeks review was received well this is going to become a weekly post!

As usual all of these products were from Sainsbury's UK.

These sour cream and chive quinoa chips cost £1.80 and are made by Eat Real and are certified gf by Coeliac UK and they are Vegan. They were absolutely delicious and had the texture of Quavers (you'll only know what those are if you are in the UK). 10/10 could eat a whole bag.

Shaken Other products are dairy free and vegan, this bottle costs £1.60

I've had Shaken Others non dairy chocolate milk before and loved it...this not so much. I couldn't taste any strawberry at all and while sweetened coconut milk is nice it just didn't live up to the chocolate milk. 4/10

Crimbles is a leading gluten free company in the UK. These were £1.60 for a pack of six and absolutely delicious! Moist, sweet coconut surrounding a slightly tart strawberry jam. 10/10 if my parents hadn't eaten the other four I might have eaten the lot.

These Strawberry Mousse are £1.75 for a pack of two from Sainsbury's own Free From range in the chilled aisle. They are gluten, milk,egg,soya free and vegan.

These were pretty good. They had a nice light texture and tasted like strawberries but had a slightly synthetic aftertaste. 8/10.

Dairy and Soya free bread Aldi

Today whilst shopping in Aldi I discovered a bread that J could eat.

Made by the Village Bakery sold at a very reasonable price this bread seems very nice. J is on abit of a hunger strike at the moment. However I slightly toasted a round of bread and put a tiny bit of strawberry jam on it , he wolfed it down. It definitely gets J’s stamp of approval.

Date with a dietitian

Date with a dietitian

We had an appointment with a dietitian this week. We have agreed that dairy and soya seem to be a problem and are continuing to avoid these.  I mentioned allergy test and as J sounds to be having non ige reactions then they wouldn’t actually show anything up. As the reflux is currently playing up we are not going to start challenging dairy until the new dosage has started to help control it.

Asco Foods Ltd recalls Clover Chips barbecue flavour corn snack

Asco Foods Ltd is recalling three batches of Leslie’s Clover Chips barbecue flavour corn snack. The product contains milk, which is not mentioned on the ingredients list. The product also contains soya which is not correctly labelled. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to soya.

Mother's Day Cupcakes

With it being Mother's Day tomorrow, you might want to whip up some amazing looking cupcakes.  This is what I gave my Mum the other year I used my favourite cupcake book Cupcakes from the Primrose Bakery and chosen the raspberry cupcakes, with half a batch of the vanilla icing, with the vanilla buttercream icing which I coloured in different coloured pinks so it can be swirled using my two colour piping bags, they're fab, I love them. I bought my Mum a teddy bear and placed the cupcake with the bear and a small Mother's Day balloon in some pretty cellophane.

 Here is how to make the cupcakes:

  Ingredients:

                   110g unsalted butter at room temperature

                   180g caster sugar

                   2 large eggs

                  125g gluten free self raising flour

                  120g gluten free plain flour

                  1 teaspoon xanthan gum

                  1 teaspoon vanilla extract

                  3 tablespoons seedless raspberry jam

 Method:

              Pre-heat your oven to gas 4/160C Fan/180C/350F.

              Select pretty cupcake cases and pop them into your muffin tray.

              Cream your butter and sugar together until pale, this takes about 3-5minutes.

              Add your eggs, one at a time, whilst continuously beating.

              Combine your flours in a separate bowl, add the xanthan gum.

              Put your milk and vanilla extract into a jug.

              Add a third of your flour mix to your creamed butter mix, whilst beating.

              Add a third of your milk mix, continue beating.

              Continue until you have added all of your mixes.

              Gently fold in your raspberry jam to create a swirl effect.

              Spoon into your cupcake cases, so that they are about 2/3 full.

              Bake for 25 minutes.

 Once cool make your icing:

 Ingredients:

                    110g unsalted butter at room temperature

                    60ml semi-skimmed milk at room temperature

                    1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

                    500g icing sugar

                    A few drops of pink food colouring

                    A few drops of red food colouring

 Method:

              Beat the butter, milk, vanilla extract and half of the icing sugar, which can take several minutes.

              Gradually add the rest of the icing sugar while beating, continue until smooth.

              Split your buttercream in two, add a couple of drops of pink food colouring to one how deep a pink you want will depend upon how many drops you need.

              Add a couple, and only a couple of red drops, if you can do one at a time to the other, you only want a hint of pink, and for some reason I found this worked better than the pink icing!

              Select which nozzle you want for your piping bag.

             Spoon mixtures into each side of your piping bag.

             Pipe your icing onto your cakes.

  I sprayed the cakes with some shimmer spray to make them look extra special.

There was only one item which R didn't like, that was the Outback Animals, I cannot eat them as they have soya in, he said they were bitter and dry, so I guess they have quite a lot of cocoa in, but my eldest son likes them. R was over the moon to be able to have ice cream in a cornet again (unfortunately I still can't as, you guessed, they've got soya in!) R said it tasted just like a real one, and has happily been munching ice creams in the depths of winter.  He hasn't tried the ice cream boats yet, but I imagine that he will enjoy those too. The Mini Moos chocolate bars were a big hit, he particularly liked the orange flavour, but has happily munched through the rest of them too. My little gem were the sponge fingers, gluten and soya free, I can't wait to make Tiramisu again, my all time favourite desert, and one I thought I wouldn't be able to have anymore! For those moments when you're a bit nibbly in the evenings, after the children have gone to bed, and you've settled down to watch something you want to watch on the telly, rather than the children's channels, a bag of Portlebay popcorn really hits the spot, we had cinnamon swirl, lemon sherbet and very berry flavours and all of them are delicious.

For some reason I haven't taken a picture of the cinnamon ones, but they were just as yummy, the lemon and berry ones have more of a zing to them, and in all of the flavours you get a bit of the flavouring stuck in the corner at the end, which you just have to dip your finger in to dig out and lick off, not that I'm a big child or anything lol  My only comment against them, is that the pack isn't quite big enough, you really need a few more in there, but I'll definitely be ordering these again. We tried the meatballs for dinner the other night, they are quite grown up meatballs, full of flavour and not like the mushy ones from a tin that my son had been used to, he did like them, but said he wouldn't want them all of the time. We had had the breakfast biscuits before, and they are ideal for those days when you don't have time to get any breakfast.  I like to keep a packet in my bag in case I get stuck out with nothing available that I can buy to eat, as I end up with a migraine if I go too long without food, I think it's something to do with my blood sugars, so it's important for me to have something with me to prevent this, although if you don't store these carefully you end up with crumbs! The only thing we haven't tried yet is the gravy, but I'm looking forward to trying it with a roast, I haven't had real gravy for quite a while (it all contains soya) and so we make do with a thickened up stock cube, not quite the same! There is a lot of choice on the website, and the delivery was quick and the website is easy to navigate and read.  I was very impressed and will be using it again. Lupin Girl x

Orchard At Tesco

I was recently offered the chance to become a member of Orchard at Tesco by email from Tesco.  It offers you the chance to try products from them either for free or at a reduced price via vouchers which they send you.  When you sign up they ask you to fill in some quick and easy surveys so that they can work out which products are best for you to try and review.  After I did this, I was sent a voucher for £3 off a minimum spend of £3 for their Tesco Free From range.  Today I have completed my online shop with Tesco for my food delivery tomorrow and am excited to have been able to add Tesco Free From Haddock and Cheddar Fishcakes to my order for free :)  I am looking forward to trying these with R when they arrive and will update you on whether or not they taste as delicious as they look, judging by some of the other Tesco Free From items we have tried they won't fail to impress.  #TriedItFree #Tesco #OrchardAtTesco #GlutenFree #SoyaFree #LupinFree #LooksDelicicous
