someone’s already probably vaguely said this before but convineer… uh..
engie’s whole following like a duckling and letting the captain decide most things and Simon almost never having had a choice in his life.
Simon’s always been dragged and pushed around his ENTIRE life by people bigger and more powerful than him, fighting back but unable to ever have the opportunity to be able to choose and decide for himself, gnawing at the iron bars of his prison in the only way he can try and push back against this order…..
..and when whatever universes and miracles cross for engineer and simon to live and meet, engineer is offering him choices. Nothing but that. Never truly deciding anything for simon.
and simon DEFINITELY would not know how to respond to anything like this. Internally he’d be like “fuck. uhm. okay. uh. what..? ive never had this.. happen to me before. how do i respond? can i really choose for myself? is this some kind of trick?”
and I bet that would instill a bit of distrust for Simon to have for engineer mark. ough. yes. And simons always confused and short-circuiting in his head when engineer asks for Simon to decide on things, and engineer just does NOT understand simon because of this.

Simon would pause and think before makin decisions, and I think that would lead to Engie telling the captain to choose and Simon panicking and making a decision that he will rethink over and over until the end of time
