Diana (also sometimes termed Dianna) was more than just a sidekick gal. She was actually square-jawed interplanetary hero Space Smith’s girlfriend and co-pilot, and frequently described as his “partner”. Space and Diana appeared in over twenty issues of Fantastic Comics (#1-22) sometimes residing on a futuristic earth but more frequently ranging across the solar system as “adventurers”. Their status vis-a-vis law enforcement was therefore a little ambiguous, and, clad in tight fitting “space” costumes, they resembled a galactic Batman and Robin, battling pirates, smugglers, alien invaders, slavers and general criminals, often engaging in brutal fisticuffs to bring the bad guys to justice. Although Diana is frequently reduced to no more than shouting “Look out, Space!” in many of their adventures as Smith battles the villains, she also packs a mean punch herself, as demonstrated in the page above, frequently kayoing her male opponents with apparent ease and helping Space to apprehend them.
There is no great character depth to Diana, in truth, but I like the implied equality that existed between this (unmarried) space couple and Diana’s feistiness is a pleasant change from many Golden Age sidekick women whose main plot device was often to be captured and provide an opportunity for the hero to rescue the girl.
