Was trying to doodle my next Starfinder character, Jels the Goblin Operative, on my lunch break and my pen made gloopy bits which made her eyes do this instead of the solid red that Starfinder goblin eyes are and I found it funny 🤣
Another goblin from outer space!
But this one is more professional.
Races Among the Stars 7: Space Goblin
Ah, the goblin. Few things about Pathfinder are so iconic and unique as their interpretation of goblins, making them superstitious, ever-hungry little weirdos instead of generically evil but weak low-level minions was such a dramatic shift away from what we expected from D&D. Sure, D&D would later add lore for non-evil goblins, but it was mostly pulled from inspiration of other sources.
It only makes sense, then, that Goblins would be one of the species to make the jump to Starfinder in it’s earliest days, before the first Alien Archive book full of creatures new and familiar was even out yet, even, complete with playable rules.
It is said that goblin-kind entered space sometime before the Gap, stowing away aboard starships bound for Absalom Station from Golarion’s surface, where they bred and multiplied. As such, much like humans, Goblins can be found in all sorts of regions of the galaxy, but their biggest concentration being the lower decks of Absalom Station.
Much like their ancestors, these goblins are usually content to get by in dirty, dingy places far from intruding big folk. However, their inherent curiosity and lack of foresight and self-preservation gets them into all sorts of conflicts with their neighbors.
However, that isn’t to say that goblins have not changed over the years. In fact, they have adapted, both physically and culturally, to the new world they find themselves in. These new “Space Goblins” have a natural knack for understanding technology and how to get it working, even if they might not entirely understand how it all works. As a result, this new breed of goblin is notorious for getting technology that others would consider “outdated”, “broken”, or “junk” working again, and create new machines from scraps that would make a trained engineer weep tears of simultaneous amazement and exasperation.
Space goblins haven’t changed much in terms of appearance from their forebears, disproportionately large heads topping scrawny bodies and having a pair of large bat-like ears and a wide, toothy mouth are all staples of their species, alongside the green skin and such.
Their society hasn’t changed much either, though many goblins now worship Triune as the patron of the technologies they adore. What’s more, the prevalence of information-based technology has led to goblins being able to interact with other species much more often, and so they are not quite as hostile to other species as they were in the past, and are much more likely to be open to trade and integration into wider society. Of course, misunderstandings and mischief are still possible, especially with goblins.
Furthermore, many quirks of their past society have carried over through the millenia, such as their aversion for horses and dogs, though in this wider galaxy, the terms “horse” and “dog” are more widely applied to any quadruped they dislike or fear, applying one or their other based on the entity’s size.
Space goblins are quite agile despite their small size, but their impulsive behavior and no desire to explain themselves makes them hard to relate to other species.
Naturally, they also have excellent night vision.
They are also a bit quicker on land than humans, able to outpace them.
Similar to ysoki, goblins have a knack for survivalism, stealth, and engineering, proving quite talented in those areas.
This goes further with their ability to quickly rig temporary fixes to broken technology to get it working right again, if only for a few moments before it breaks down again and needs proper repairs.
With their high dexterity and no other bonuses to stats, operative as well as any ranged or finesse build with combat classes seems like the most natural choice. However, don’t discount the traits that goblins have that make them impressive with technology, even if their creations as mechanics and technomancers might occasionally explode the sensibilities of most other engineers (or, you know, literally explode). Goblins also have only the weakness to charisma, making envoy and witchwarper hard, but not impossible choices. This simplicity means they can prove quite powerful and useful with pretty much any class. Heck, the focus on dexterity means they can make excellent precogs as well, and the thought of an impulsive little gremlin that knows more about the future than you do but still acts like a goblin does is endlessly amusing to me.
That does it for today, but we’ll continue tomorrow with more interstellar species, including one entry I’ll be writing in Indianapolis, since I’m going to GenCon for multiple days this year!
Arm Maintenance
Eri's trying to iron out a few quirks with her prosthetic, but it's harder for her to troubleshoot fit tolerances with just one arm...
From today's "Me-Art Monday" stream, because I need to draw and share my own characters more! I plan to draw and talk about more details from my own work on more art streams, such as the space exploration setting that Eri here is from, in the coming weeks. Also I missed my space goblin. <3
