When We Wanted Retro-Internet, We Never Meant Retro-Morality
this is a callout post about SpaceHey. two users on the website have already made similar posts about this matter on the platform itself (Zigzag Buster and Dana Scully), but i wanted to make one for myself. SpaceHey has been criticized on here before (most notably for banning people for posting positive content about the death of charlie kirk), but it's gotten much worse in recent days.
the site's moderators have been allowing and defending bigotry, harassment, and CSEM to be posted/sent to users, while actively banning users who call public attention to that content.
Zigzag Buster made posts about users who sent him racist slurs or posted explicit pornography (both of which being against the website's rules), and the moderators took them down. a former moderator of the site was recently removed from the mod channel after trying to inform the mods of the issues regarding CSEM on the platform. i was banned for repeatedly bringing awareness to users who were posting homophobic content, while almost NOTHING was done about that content. i was told by a mod (vasilis) that doing so counted as "harassment-" yet the homophobic posts somehow didnt count as hate speech.
the moderators have attempted to say that allowing callout posts to exist will turn the site "into a war zone of harassment," but callout posts wouldnt be made to begin with if they made better efforts to remove the harmful content that users are calling out in the first place. if you claim to be against hate speech, but punish users for telling others when hate speech is being said, then you are only creating a safe space for it
i get that SpaceHey is meant to be a "retro social-network..." but allowing and defending hate speech on the platform is a bit too retro for me.
if you're on the site, post about this. message the moderators. make it clear that this isnt okay. and in the meantime... join neocities or nekoweb instead. they might not allow the interactions that spacehey does, or make it easier for people who are new to CSS/HTML to find layouts, but at least they arent banning people for not vibing with bigotry and harassment.
