Astronomers have spied the source of a recent supernova. In 2025, a stellar explosion was spotted in nearby galaxy NGC 1637. But which specific star exploded remained a mystery. Now they have an answer!
By examining pre-supernova images from the James Webb Space Telescope, the scientists identified the supernova progenitor: a red supergiant star. The star was surrounded by so much dust it was rendered invisible to the Hubble Space Telescope: https://news.stsci.edu/4alt51V
