I have some thoughts about the Bajorans
There are always those jokes going around about Space Pope and all that & they're funny, I make them too
But watching Ds9 as a Polish person the Bajorans & Kira really remind me very much of my experience, with oppression and a people using organised religion to cope & unite against it, as well as the people in religious power abusing the hell out of this situation and the struggle that then ensues for the individual.
Occupied Bajor reminds me of occupied Poland during the world war & the communist regime. The Bajorans using their religion to cope with that reminds me of a lot of Catholic Poles clinging to Catholicism in times of hardship. The Kai very much reminds me of the Pope, the Vedeks of the Bishops, heck even the robes and texts and candles the Bajorans use seem familiar. The religious angst various characters experience sounds very familiar to me, having grown up Catholic (and Queer!). Kira trying to reconcile her faith with her actions as well as trying to come to terms with her faith leaders repeatedly failing her and the pain that accompanies this while still participating in services and remaining practising. It all sounds very much like my own struggle.
And boy, the religious leaders who abuse their power during but especially after the occupation sounds just like post-communism Polish politics. The religious organisation who was held as the beacon of hope against the regime by many & who abuses its power immensely. The complicated state of religion being simultaneously a point of rallying against oppression and oppressive themselves. The Kai drunken with power. The corruption. Trying to reconcile your faith in the abstract celestial entity with the very real harmful Bajoran/Polish Catholic politics is something both Kira and I struggle with. Her standing up to her Kai but trying to stay faithful despite all strongly resonates with me. I don't know if I will make the same choices as she has but seeing this on screen, idk, it does something. I very much relate.
Tldr; Polish person thinks the Bajorans share a lot of similarities to Polish Catholicism, in all its good & especially bad complexities
