Hi! (I meant to get to this much earlier, but time seems to have escaped me lately)

1.Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

I have two going on right now (technically)

 The City of Eventide is my main one right now, and it’s getting close to being done! It’s kind of an urban fantasy/paranormal thingy with ghosts and demons and some werewolves and stuff like that. The main character is half human, half demon, which makes him more open to stuff like ghosts, and so a big part of the story is about him learning how to safely help spirits around Eventide without himself getting hurt. I like a lot about it, but something I really enjoy is that pretty much all the main side characters are there for Asher, the main character, and for each other. People are nice to each other (for the most part), and I like that.

The other one doesn’t really have a name yet so I’m just calling it Space Wip for now. It’s a sci-fi… thing that I’m not 100% sure where I’m going to go with it but a lot of it is about the three-person crew of the courier ship (which maybe carries some less than legal cargo sometimes) The Lord of Chaos. Each of them is more or less on the run from different people for different reasons, and are basically a little family. So far all I really know is that they get found by the different people looking for them, they get separated and they do whatever they can to be reunited.

25. What part of writing is the most fun?

I really like writing the descriptions! It’s just so easy to get carried away and really get creative with things, especially if I’m describing stuff that I like lol. Places like forests and coastlines are probably among my favorite to write about. There’s just so much I can put into it! I think part of it is that I really like landscapes, so I tend to almost like, romanticize the ones I like when I’m writing about them.

Volt took a sip of her drink, sweet but very strong. Good. This might be a very long lunch, one that she was starting to regret suggesting in the first place.

Indigo put her drink down in front of her before looking up at Volt. “So, what do you think?”

She shrugged. “It’s a good place, as long as the food is good.”

“It’s nothing special,” Indigo smiled, weakly. “But it’s good, I liked it both times I’ve been here.”

Volt hummed. What were they supposed to talk about? She glanced around at the venue. For lunch it was pretty busy, but everyone seemed to keep to themselves, no one paying any attention to the pair of them.

Indigo seemed to notice her watching. “Ever vigilant, aren’t you?” She paused as Volt looked at her. “Thought I suppose it’s served you well.”

Volt shrugged again. “Well,” her voice chilled. “You learn these things when there is a powerful criminal empire after your first mate and your son—” She cut herself off too late, pressing her lips together. She hadn’t meant to call Skyler her son in front of her.

Indio raised her eyebrows, looking over her wine glass. “Your son, hm?” She took a long drink, then held her glass in front of her, eyes cast done. “You really think of him that way?”

Volt didn’t answer right away, anger simmering deep in her chest. How dare Indigo act liked she cared. She took a drink, trying to think of what to say that wouldn’t piss her off too badly.

“I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised,” Indigo sighed, leaning back enough to rest her head against the bench. “Truthfully, Volt, I’m grateful you took him.”

“Sure you are.” Volt spat. “I don’t believe that for a second. You were ready to exploit him for all you could.” She couldn’t hold the venom back from her words. “If you were so glad then why send people after him then? Why not just let him go?”

Indigo sighed. “I wanted to but, you know…”

“I don’t.”

“Well,” Indigo said. “His mother found out and demanded we get him back, so she stared breathing down my neck, and my subordinates were not happy he’d been lost.” She scowled. “I had a reputation to uphold, and I couldn’t have them doubting me so soon after taking the leadership. If they decided to overthrow me it would cost my life.”

Volt set her drink down and leaned over the table, pointing directly at her. “And you think the choice to keep him was easy?” She growled, eyes narrowed with barely contained rage. “I knew exactly who you were, I knew exactly what kind of enemy I was making by not delivering him, but I’ll be damned if I was going to be complicit in that.”

She grabbed her drink and downed about half of it before slamming it to the table and leaning all the way back. “The day I chose to keep that boy I wrote my will. As soon as we landed next, I got it notarized and sent a copy to my partner and my parents. I was the first and only time I’ve contacted my family in years.” She seethed, pointing again. “So, don’t you dare try and justify what you did, you heartless bitch.”

Indigo looked like she was about to reply but held her tongue as the waitress returned with their food, setting the plates down and slipping away again.

“All the same,” Indigo spoke low, reaching finally for her plate. “I’m glad you had the conviction to do what I did not.” She glanced up. “I admire you for that, for all you’ve done for him, and Trout—sorry, for Richard.”

“Don’t waste your empty words, they not worth shit coming from you.”

Been thinking about the space story lately and came to the realization that like, 95% of everyone’s problems in this story can be traced back to Indigo.

Random snippet from my Space Reboot drafting

The facility, from the outside, looked unassuming and easy to miss, nestled between a small spacecraft depot and what looked like nothing of note. But Indigo found the main entrance easily, like she knew exactly where she was going.

Volt followed close behind her, Skyler at her shoulder. All were dressed nicely, looking as much like potential partners to the company working out of the organization. According to Indigo, they bought themselves some legitimacy through masking as a genetic research group.

Volt glanced at Skyler, uneasy. She’d wanted him to stay on the Oracle, but he’d refused, and she figured it was better having him at her side instead of snaking in after them. But she would have her eye on him the whole time. She brushed her hand over where her pistol was hidden in her jacket’s inner pocket. She had not told either of them she took it with her, and she didn’t tell them she would shoot to kill if she had to protect Skyler.

The three of them didn’t talk as they approached the entrance. The door was locked, as expected, and Indigo, disguised in case they would recognize her, pushed the intercom button off to the side.

“Good afternoon!” She sounded unusually chipper. “It’s [Full fake name] here, with my clients.”

There was a pause, then it crackled to life. “Oh. I’ll be there in a moment.”

She stepped back with a firm nod to Volt, but kept her mouth shut. She had suggested it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that they would be recording and monitoring audio and video.

The door opened and a tired looking man in a plain suit stood before them. He looked over them, and Volt’s heart pounded. Would he recognize Indigo, even with the disguise, if he knew her from her time on the EC project?

But his eyes passed right over them, and he extended a hand to Indigo. “Nice to finally meet you [fake name].” Then he turned to Volt and did the same. “My name is Arvid, nice to meet you.”

Volt returned the gesture, giving her fake name, and Skyler did he same. She had to admit, he was so far playing his roll well. The son of a wealthy investor being groomed to take over his father’s business.

Arvid clasped his hands in front of him with a polite smile. “Alright, follow me then.”

He led the way down a plain, tiled hallway. The lighters were bright, and the décor eerily vacant of anything to humanize the space. Volt swallowed, resisting the urge to cross her arms. The place reminded her of Indigo.

They followed him into what he described as his office, a plain room with a desk, computer, books… but nothing at all identifying to him. No photos, no notes… clinical. He offered them seats, and they set, letting Indigo take the first one. Volt sat by the back, leaning against the wall with Skyler beside Indigo. That was what they’d agreed on, as much as Volt hated it.

Since most of the characters in space reboot are old ocs of mine from about ten years ago, I thought it would be fun to compare how they were back when they were created vs now!

Finally:

Skyler Dewpoint

Another with significant changes. As much as he appearance changed, he personality changed even more. He just used to be so much... Happier. Makes me feel kind of bad lol

out of all three main characters, I remember the least about who Skyler was when he was first created (I don’t think he had very much depth to him back then anyway)

Was a lot more carefree

Had been found one day (by Richard I think? or Volt? I don’t really remember) when he was a kid with no memory of who he was or where he came from

was the kind of kid to get into a lot of (mostly) harmless mischief just to see what he was capable of pulling off

didn’t have a last name yet (oops)

Had not experienced any significant trauma

Maybe he had something bad happen in his past but he can’t remember it and it never came back to affect him so he’s pretty chill about life

Just a good kid that got in trouble sometimes but was going to do just fine

I’m so sorry current Skyler

Writeblr Hunger Games Prompt 7: The Interview

this was kind of fun to write and I stayed up waaaaay to late writing it lol. (thanks to @ratracechronicler again for settign all this up!)

Indigo was the last interview of the last district, but somehow Cesar’s enthusiastic welcome could have fooled her into thinking she was the first. No, not the first. The only tribute who drew his, and the entire capitol’s, excitement.

“All the way from district 12, the elusive Dr. Indigo Carmine!”

She strode onto the stage with a politician’s smile, waving back at the cheering crowd with one hand and carefully lifting the hem of her long dress with the other.

Cesar gave a sweeping, dramatic gesture towards one of the two chairs set up on stage. “Welcome, Dr. Carmine.”

“Oh, please,” Indigo chuckled. “Call me Indigo.” She sat as directed, crossing one leg neatly over the other.

“Indigo then,” Cesar continued. “Wonderful confidence you have. How do you manage it, even after that well…” He gave the audience a knowing look, “dismal training score the other day?”

Of course he would bring that up. Indigo took a pause before answering to gather her thoughts. He was trying to rile her, bring out some reaction that would keep viewers talking. She could play his game.

“Well,” Indigo shrugged with a deep sigh. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if I took every failure as a the be-all-end-all.” She grinned. “Besides, it’s impossible to make a sound judgement on a single data point, or in this case, a single test of skill.” He didn’t need to know that no, the low scores were probably more than accurate. But If all of Panem believed otherwise, it might just work in her favor.

Cesar nodded along. “That’s the spirit!” He gestured towards the crowd, loose and comfortable. “Now, you’ve been quite tight lipped about yourself you know. Tell me, is there anyone waiting for you back home?” He raised an eyebrow cheekily. “A lover perhaps?”

Indigo laughed. “Oh, no no.” She leaned forward with a sly grin, resting one finger alongside her cheek. “I’m free tonight though if that’s what you’re asking.”

She gave the crowd a moment to oooh, and for Cesar to act flustered for the cameras before leaning back and casting her eyes downward. She waited another moment for the murmurings to fade to worried silence. Then another second for good measure.

“I do have two children.” Technically not a lie, they used her egg cells for the project after all. “But I can’t say I have any idea where they are now. I haven’t seen them in years.” She raised her head, finding a camera and looking into the shining, faceless glass. “So Trout, Salmon, if you’re watching this. I’m sorry I didn’t find you sooner.” She swallowed. “I love you.”

It didn’t matter if she actually did, or what they might have thought if they heard it. With training scores like hers, she needed all the sympathy she could get. Hell, she would take pity if it gave her a chance of survival.

With a look of practiced artificial concern, Cesar gently guided her to stand, with what should have been a comforting hand on her arm. “Win this and maybe they’ll find you instead!” He presented her again to the crowd, the smile back on his face. “Good luck out there, Indigo Carmine, district 12!”
