Starry Dress Tutorial

 First I just start with a basic dress shape, If you weren’t sure how to start a dress then I thought I would include a small tutorial of that here but I could make a more in depth one on just general dress shapes if anyone wants. Basically since this is a sleeveless dress I start with a line going right under neath the arm then I just use the biggest pencil tool to doodle out a strap until it looks good and then fix it to look more strap like, after that I extend the front of the dress between the two straps so it’s higher on the chest and then style it like it is in the last picture. 

I started at the bottom of the dress and colored in the first few pixels with the darkest color I had- in this case black- as shown in yellow to make it look clearer since the black blended in. Then above the black I have a lighter dark color to go with the black. 

In the second picture I started with a two lighter colors than the base one is lighter than the other and started dotting those around, next I just expanded the dark colors up one side of the dress and the lighter ones on the other as you can see in the third picture. 

In the fourth I have an even lighter color spread in mainly where it already has a light color rather than in the dark spots. 

In the fifth one I just have where I outlined the top of the dress and shaded it, I have a dark tan to shade the skin and under the black I have a dark blue. I usually do this at the beginning but it doesn’t really matter when. 

Lastly I just put the lightest color I have all around in little dots to look like stars and then put light another light color around those to make them look shinier. If you look in the picture below you can see how I have a lighter color surrounding the stars and in the middle I have one with two lighter colors surrounding so that one looks extra shiny. I usually only surround the stars with one color, but putting a few really shiny ones in there can look nice.  

So to try and sum it up and also if you’re confused on what colors to use you can use any in the blue/purple/green range but they have to go together and mix well and the shades you’ll need is at least:

Darkest, darker, dark, base, lighter, light, lighter, lightest. 

Then it’s basically just arranging those colors in any way that looks good to you. I usually put light in one area  dark in the other and have them kind of merge together. Then to finish it’s just putting as many stars as you want.

The one thing showed in this video that's not in the linked cloud tutorial is how I use Free Transform and Warp in Photoshop to quickly make a sea of clouds without having to worry about drawing in perspective. The perspective is added afterwards, the same way I painted windows and buildings in the cityscape speedpaint tutorial.

The total speedpaint took 2 hours in Paint tool SAI and Photoshop. I use a Wacom Intuos 4.
