Of Time and Space ... Exhibition wrist watches in art by MoonwatchUniverse. Posters and brochures for our upcoming exhibition, showcasing a dozen examples of wrist watches depicted in artworks, the focus lays at the Omega Speedmaster chronograph, known for its use during both American and (Soviet-) Russian spaceflight missions. Exactly 45 years ago, Omega’s ex-Alaska Project II Speedmaster chronographs in distinctive red outer cases found enthusiastic customers on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Combing through photographs, providing some exceptional counsel on the subject, MoonwatchUniverse clarifies the “mystery” enshrouding the use of these time pieces onboard the Salyut-6 space station in 1977. Spaceflight and Cold War super powers scoops... 40 years ago, the first co-ed spaceflight mission, Russian Soyuz T-7 carried female cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya to the Salyut-7 space station. Two years later in July 1984, during Soyuz T-12 mission, Savitskaya became the first female spacewalker working 3 hours 35 minutes outside Salyut-7 ! Is your header picture a space station or a fancy watch? I always assumed it was a space station but now I'm doubting myself.

It’s a fancy watch!

“The Midnight Planetarium” is a watch by Van Cleef & Arpels in partnership with Dutch watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw.

It not only tells Earth-time, but accurately tracks six planets in our solar system (Uranus takes 84 years to orbit the sun which makes any progress imperceptible so they left it and the farther planets off).

The planets are represented with precious stones that match their natural colors, and the watch took three years to make. It’s an absolute work of art and technical skill. The first time I saw it I was in so much awe I stared for half an hour and kept coming back to it over the next month.

I’ve never been interested in expensive jewelry; this is the exception. I’ll never be able to afford it either because it costs $245,000. Even if I got enough money I wouldn’t. That money would go to help family and friends. But I can keep pictures to stare at once in a while, and admire the beauty from afar just like I do the moon and stars.
