A little fic I wrote for @thunderversary-rewatch-party although it is a bit late now...

Alan’s always loved stargazing. Looking up at the open expanse of black, a curtain of both nothing and everything. Some people felt that the sheer size of the universe made them feel small and insignificant, but not Alan. Despite everything, despite the stars, black holes and supernovas, he was here and he was now. It grounded him.

Today the stars do not provide that comfort. If you ask Alan if he feels scared he would tell you no. He’s a member of International Rescue, the youngest astronaut in history. Risking his life high above the stratosphere is what he does. It’s his job, his life, his family. But he would be lying to you. There’s a bomb on his tail and the clock is ticking.

He remembers stargazing with his dad. He doesn’t remember the specifics, he doesn’t remember his dad’s voice, or the words he spoke, but he does remember that it happened.

His dad was a star. He shone so brightly, guiding others to safety, and providing warmth in his embrace. He died like a star. A supernova of light, leaving a lasting impression on every soul who knew him. His absence was always there and always would be.

If Alan died now, he’d die like his dad. In a bright and ever-blinding explosion, hurtling away from Earth and away from home. But most importantly, he’d die saving lives. And maybe, some small part of Alan is ok with that. 

But that doesn’t stop the intense fear that vibrates throughout his body. John’s voice reverberates in his ear, calming him, keeping his mind straight and his soul still. Today the stars loom over him. Alan can feel them watching him, waiting for him. But they would not take him today.

High rise ridiculousness - The usual. No deaths though. So that was alright. Lots of panicking people - the screaming sticks to you for a fair bit.

Nearly sent Alan to his death - supposed to be a routine task, just a training exercise. Should have predicted there’d be dodgy stuff up there. GDF heads are going to roll. Don’t get me started on that London lot.

Why is everything always trying to kill them? How am I supposed to keep them safe? Could only watch, pray and hope he knew I loved him. Told him again this evening. He rolled his eyes.

To-Do List:

Analysis the schematics of the stealth mine (figure out how to deactivate them without a kill code)

Upgrade Thunderbird 3 and 5's sensors accordingly

Notes:

It is very concerning that there are still these stealth mines up in orbit. Hopefully, with time, I can discover a way to safely deactivate them without a kill code, if that's even possible. Then we can avoid this situation happening again.

I will need to upgrade both Thunderbird 3 and Thunderbird 5's scanners so they can detect the mines. Then, I could pass the schematics on to the GDF as deactivating mines should really be their job. In all honesty, I'm a little annoyed that the GDF was unaware of this mine beforehand, global security is supposed to be their job.
