Spaghetti + Compliments
You were curled up on the couch at the Curtis house, a cozy blanket draped over your legs. The soft light of the setting sun streamed through the window, letting a warm glow enter the room. Darry was in the kitchen, busy making dinner, the sound of pots and pans clinking gently filling the air.
After a while, the inviting aroma of spaghetti and garlic bread wafted into the living room, making your stomach rumble. You couldn't help but smile. Darry always put his heart into cooking, and it showed.
"Hey, what’s the best part about this meal?" Darry called out, peeking his head around the corner with a teasing grin.
"The chef!" you replied with a laugh, leaning back against the couch.
He rolled his eyes playfully but couldn’t suppress his small smile. He walked over to you, wiping his hands on a dish towel. “You’re just saying that because I’m cooking,” he teased, taking a seat next to you.
“Maybe, but it doesn’t hurt that you’re also pretty cute,” you said, and the moment your words hung in the air, you both burst into laughter. Darry's cheeks turned a light shade of pink, and you found it adorable.
“You’re full of compliments today," he said, nudging your shoulder playfully. “Are you trying to flatter me?”
“Maybe just a little,” you replied, your heart racing as you caught his gaze. “Just appreciating everything you do for the family… and me.”
Darry softened, his expression turning serious for a moment. “I’m just doing my best,” he said quietly. Then, after a moment, a bright idea struck him. “Alright, let’s make a deal. For every compliment I give you, you have to give me one back.”
You grinned, accepting the challenge. “Okay, I’ll go first. You’re an amazing cook and an even better big brother,” you said, leaning closer.
He chuckled. “Alright, but that’s too easy. You’re not allowed to play it safe.”
“Oh, I won’t,” you promised. You thought for a second, then added, “You’re also really responsible, even if it’s about cleaning up after the boys.”
Darry rubbed the back of his neck, feigning modesty. “Thanks, but that’s a bit of a stretch.”
“Okay, I’ll admit I could’ve gotten more creative,” you said. “Your turn!”
He took a deep breath, a spark of mischief in his eyes. “You’re just as cute as that spaghetti. Is that safe enough?”
You burst into laughter, “That’s definitely safe, but it’s also adorable!” You leaned against him, the warmth of his body seeping into you.
As you both sat there, the aroma of dinner filling the room, you felt a sense of contentment wash over you. Moments like this, filled with laughter and affection, were what made everything worthwhile. Darry wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer, and you felt grateful for the little moments of joy together.
“Dinner’s almost ready,” he said softly, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear. “Maybe we could even ask the boys to join us… or just make it our little date night?”
You smiled brightly at the idea, feeling your heart flutter. “I’d love that,” you said, and the warmth in his eyes made you realize how lucky you were to be a part of the Curtis family.
As you both continued exchanging playful banter and compliments, the bond between you felt stronger than ever, and you knew you would cherish moments like this forever.
Looks like a lovely date night between Felony Carl and Globby to me. ;)Hopefully they'll actually get to eating dinner eventually. ;) ^_^<3<3<3

Neighbors Bond Over Spaghetti Dinners
March 9th is National Meatball Day. Unfortunately, the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections has not identified any photographs with meatballs, so instead I give you photos of spaghetti dinners in the 1980s hosted by the Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. The annual EPNI spaghetti dinners drew crowds of hundreds and brought together residents of the area from all cultures and backgrounds.
From 1981 to 1991, the Twin Cities was the site of a unique grant program to help strengthen neighborhoods and increase citizen participation. The McKnight-Neighborhood Self-Help Initiatives Program gave millions to inner-city neighborhood organizations in Minneapolis and St. Paul to support community building. Money was used in a variety ways, from women’s leadership programs to crime prevention plans, from choir performances to events such as the EPNI spaghetti dinners.

Hennepin County Library Special Collections is home to the Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. Records. Over 50 boxes of new material is currently being processed into the collection.
