Synopsis: The gang’s reaction to having a partner who plays an instrument !!

Darry Curtis:

‧⟢ He respects it, especially if it's your way of making money. As it's canon he played football in high school, I don't think he has ever played any sort of instrument, maybe aside from a little bit of acoustic guitar. If you're willing, he’ll ask you to play something for him whenever the two of you have free time, or are relaxing in any way.

Sodapop Curtis:

‧⟢ The first time he sees you playing your instrument is when he gets off work at the DX early and decides to stop by your house, to find you playing away for fun, or for practice, and is instantly enamored. One of his favorite things is when people just simply have hobbies, so he will ask you to try and teach him some stuff.

Ponyboy Curtis:

‧⟢ Similar to Sodapop, Ponyboy loves when people are able to have hobbies they enjoy, like how he reads in his free time. He won't try to learn how to play your instrument, but he will ask you to play for him while he reads sometimes. Parallel play is most likely one of his love languages, rooting in quality time with you.

Johnny Cade:

‧⟢ Loves to hang out in the lot while you play for him, especially if your instrument is on the smaller side and is able to be carried around easily. If you ask Johnny if he would like to learn how to play your instrument, I think he would try it, but inevitably decide it's not for him. He’ll stick to listening to your dedication to your craft.

Dallas Winston:

‧⟢ Makes fun of it immediately, unless you play a variant of guitar or drums. Eventually, he warms up to the sound of your instrument, even if he acts like he doesn't care. He's probably a little envious because that's not something he can do, but respects your craft because it's you. P.S. you totally bonked him on the head with your instrument at least one time.

Two-Bit Mathews:

‧⟢ Like Sodapop and Ponyboy, admires when people have hobbies they care about. He’s very lighthearted about it though, and likes to make jokes that if you get any better, you're gonna start attracting attention from girls and guys alike. Of course, he doesn't mind that though, and loves to remind you that he's proud of you in secret.

Steve Randle:

‧⟢ Underestimates how skilled you are at your craft, and makes fun of you, at least until you actually play in front of him for the first time. From then on, he respects your dedication to your instrument, though he still likes to make the occasional lighthearted jab at you. In the end, you know he's just playing around.

Darrel ‘Darry’ Curtis—Slow, careful kisses saved for the two of you

Darry doesn’t have much time throughout the days to spend time with you, let along give you a lot of affection. Most of the time, you’re usually receiving quick pecks before he leaves for his next shift. So when he is able to finally give you a kiss he does it properly.

I’m talking—on hand on your waist, the other cupping your cheek or the back of your neck as his lips dance carefully against yours. Darry also gives a lot of head or forehead kisses. He’ll bring you into a bear hug and will press a kiss to the side of your head while doing so.

He also is the kind of guy who isn’t too big on PDA. Ask him for a kiss in public, he’ll do it, but not to the extent when you guys are alone. Even in front of the gang, the most you’ll get is a peck. But when you’re alone, he’ll kiss you like it’s the last time he ever will.

Sodapop Curtis—In front of everyone: usually pretty clean

Soda is a lover boy, and he loves to give kisses. In my mind, I wanna say he is the perfect kisser. He isn’t inexperienced, but he also isn’t the kind of guy to try and french kiss any moment he can get. He’s careful and deliberate with his kisses.

I can see him grabbing you by your wrist and pulling you in, making you give him a kiss before you or him leave to go do something. He is also into cheek or wrist kissing. Just something small and innocent. Now, he will also kiss your neck and collarbone, but that’s more in private.

He’ll kiss you wherever, he doesn’t care. You came to drop something off for him down at the DX, expect a kiss. Stopping by at his house, kiss. Laying with him, kiss. He’ll kiss you wherever. He’s tame though.

Ponyboy Curtis—Sweet, middle school type kisses

Let’s be realistic now, Pony doesn’t have much game. Yeah, he sorta had a little thing going on with Cherry and may have been with a few greaser girls, but that’s it. So Pony isn’t like his brothers. I think he is more of a—giving multiple pecks (popcorn kisses) then a full blown makeout kind of guy.

Again, he likes to kiss your cheek, your hand, and your jaw. He thinks it makes him a gentleman and a real ‘flirt’ whenever he does so.

And PDA for Pony doesn’t go far. Sadly, he won’t kiss you in public. His ears and face will get too red for his own good. He’ll hold your hand and sit close to you, but he won’t kiss you. I think it’s cause he doesn’t want to get teased by the gang, but also cause he likes to keep those moments private.

Johnny Cade—Desperate, slow, and full of emotion

Sadly, Johnny never got much love growing up. He had the gang, but that was it. The boys gave him a bit of affection—side hugs or wrestling him to the ground—but once you came along, it was a whole new game. He loved getting close, holding hands and cuddling. But once you guys kissed, it was all he ever wanted.

It was his way of saying, ‘I love you,’ without actually having to say it. So, he loved pouring all of his emotions into kissing you. Hands on both sides of your face, kissing you like he’ll never get to again. Kisses your nose, forehead, cheeks, jaw, and neck. Lower is more innocent, but with love in it.

He’ll give you simple kisses in public, but like Darry, won’t full blown make out or anything. Will bring you close and stay near you, even when the gang teases him. You’re the first person to truly love him, and he won’t let that go.

Dallas ‘Dally’ Winston—Messy, needy, and experienced

Dally’s a slut. Yes, he was with Sylvia, but what makes you think it was just her? He’s been around the block and he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve. He isn’t this crazy sex deviant, but he loves those deep, messy kisses. Your lips gloss smeared, lips swollen from kissing too hard, and your spit being mixed with his.

He’ll move from your lips to down your neck, collarbones, and your chest. He’ll just place messy kisses while his hands pretty much roam all over you. He doesn’t know directly where to put them as every place seems good to him.

PDA? He’ll kiss ya, but like I said with most of the guys, he won’t smother you. Your his girlfriend, no one else’s. You put on a show for him, not for the others. He’ll place his hand on your thigh, waist, whatever, but won’t be practically ripping your clothes off. That ain’t him.

Keith ‘Two-Bit’ Matthews—Silly, gently, and all smiles

Two-Bit is known for being silly and not being serious. His kisses typically will be the same. Now, I’m not saying he’s never serious, he can be, but most of the time he’s just full of love and giggles. He’ll have his hands on your hips or waist as his kisses you gently, trying not to smile.

He loves kisses you, and even the idea of you alone already gets this man giddy. He might love you just as much as he loves Mickey Mouse. So while kisses, he’ll smile and break he kiss. Or worse, he’ll get into a giggle fit and can’t stop giggling while kissing. Kisses pretty much all over your face, you can’t get away.

He won’t mind kissing you. Same way as before, gently hand on you waist, leaning in to kiss you. The boys will make a joke and cause him to grin and stop kissing you.

Steve Randle—Serious, deep, and intimate

Steve went a long time without getting much attention. With Soda being his best friend, a lot of girls tended to flock to Soda instead. So once he had you, he wanted to give all of his affection to you. He wasn’t one for jokes in moments like this. Sure, he can let something slip, but he usually doesn’t.

Like most of the boys, hand on your waist or hip, the other cupping your neck. He kissed with a purpose and lets you know he is there. Doesn’t like the half-assed kisses either. If your kissing him, you better do it properly or he’ll start whining. He’ll kiss your lips, cheek bones, jawline, neck, and collarbones.

He’ll kiss you in public, but this is where he’ll be a hypocrite. Won’t kiss you as deeply, but will give you a peck before shooing you away. He’ll hold your hand, his hand on your thigh or waist, keeping you close. But again, won’t be throwing himself onto you.

The lunch in Ponyboy’s mouth tasted acutely similar to a steaming pile of dog crap.

He scowled, swallowing down his sandwich.

Across the cafeteria, you were talking to, and giggling at a boy. And that wasn’t even the worst part.

This creature had an aura, one that certainly wasn’t positive to Pony, and nor would it be to the other Curtis boys.

Would Ponyboy face you up front about it? Of course not. He was looking out for you, sure, but he also had twin duties to keep up with.

So the second Darry and Soda got home from work, Ponys mouth was running faster than his legs could.

“She’s got a boyfriend! And he looks like a real creep!”

Darry raised his brows silently, watching you tackle Pony. The two of you tousled for a good minute, until Sodapop yanked Ponyboy off of you.

“Quit it. Pony ya just being over-protective.”

The younger boy squirmed in Sodas hold.

“Invite him ‘round for dinner,” Darry spoke up finally. “I wanna see for myself.”

You huffed, sitting up with a scowl. “Ain’t nothing to see!”

“Liar!”

This time Darry caught you before hell could break loose again.

“He should be here by now…” 

Your eyes rested on the nearby clock, as your boyfriend grew more tardy by each tick.

Pony gave a triumphant look to Darry and Soda, which you noticed and kicked his shin from underneath the table.

Finally, 30 minutes later than anticipated, there was a sharp knock at the door.

You bounded up, racing to open the door with a large smile.

The boy, Brian, at the door grunted, sidestepping you as you attempted to hug him.

Darry had appeared behind you silently, holding out a hand to Brian, who shook it and mumbled an introduction.

“Pleasure.” Darry deadpanned, moving back to the kitchen to where Pony was scowling and Soda was smiling slightly.

“Ain’t seem that bad, Pony. Maybe a bit bland..”

“No, no, no. He is evil. Trust me.” Sodapop chuckled again at Ponys warning.

You led Brian in, yapping excitedly about your day, although he was clearly not listening, an openly annoyed expression on his face.

The three brothers shared a silent look, before Darry started dishing up everyone’s meal

From that night, Darry noted that your boyfriend constantly seemed bored or bothered by you. 

Soda saw how he subtly tried to control you, with where or how you sat. 

And Pony noticed he was a mouth breather, which was obviously the worst sign.

A few days after that unimpressive night, you burst through the front door with tears streaming down your face as you made a beeline for your bedroom.

Dally and Johnny, who’d crashed on your couch, both jumped up, equally startled by your dramatic entrance.

Ponyboy raced in a few moments after you, panting for a moment then continuing his pursuit.

“C’mon, open the door! Tell me what’s wrong!”

He huffed, trying at the very locked door once again before slumping against the wall and sliding down to the floor.

“What’s up with her?” Dally asked from the end of the hall.

“Man, beats me.”

Pony grumbled, before burying his face into his hands. He was so stressed about you. You were usually so cheerful, quick to banger back with Pony.

But that afternoon, when he made a joke about Brian, all he got was tears.

Pony didn’t move from beside your door, listening to your muffled sniffles and sobs.

Thankfully Darry and Soda (and Steve) got home earlier than usual.

“Pony! Where’s your sister?” Darry called out.

“Didn’t kill her did ya?” Ponyboy finally looked up at Sodas words.

“She’s locked herself away, man. I said something about her boyfriend and— and now she’s bawling her eyes out.” By now Pony was holding his own tear back.

Soda tugged Pony to his feet, escorting him back out to the living room.

Darry knocked lightly on your door.

“Hey bub, you alright?”

There was some soft rustling, then the door clicked open and you lunged into his arms.

 You’d always been Darry’s little girl, having his protection and adoration since birth. Pony had Soda, and you had Darry.

You babbled for a moment, before you cleared your throat with a few coughs.

“Deep breaths, it’s okay…”

“He cheated! He kissed another girl, Dar.” You sniffled again, your lip shaking and glistening threatening to leak again.

Five pairs of greaser ears perked from down the hall.

“He’s an idiot, sugar.”

“I know! I know! I should’ve listened to Pony and steered clear…”

Darry shook his head, wiping a tear from your cheek. “It ain’t your fault. Don’t go blaming yourself, and you better not apologise for anything, okay?”

You nodded, promptly burying your face into your brother’s shoulder.

Darry guided you back to bed, before he met back up with the gang.

“Ya know where he lives, Pony?”

Ponyboy nodded, hesitantly murmuring an address. “Blue car out front.”

The Curtis gang filed out of the house, aside from Ponyboy who volunteered to watch over you.

It was safe to say that you never paid Brian a second thought ever again.

The sun always felt different in the years after everything happened.

Not softer—just quieter. Like the world had finally decided to stop screaming for a while.

Darry noticed it most on mornings like this.

He was in the kitchen before dawn, sleeves rolled up, coffee already brewed because he’d been up since habit-thirty, not because he needed to be. The house was still half-asleep, the kind of stillness that used to make him uneasy back when silence meant something bad was coming.

Now it just meant peace.

Behind him, he heard soft footsteps.

“You’re up early,” you said gently, voice still thick with sleep.

Darrel didn’t turn right away. He didn’t need to. “You say that like it’s new.”

“It isn't,” you replied, and there was a hint of a smile in it.

That made him glance over his shoulder.

You were standing in the doorway in one of his old shirts, hair messy, eyes half-lidded with warmth instead of exhaustion. There was something about seeing you like that—like you belonged here, like you’d always belonged here—that still made something in his chest tighten in a way he never said out loud.

“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked.

You shook your head. “You weren’t there.”

That was all it took.

Darrel set the mug down and crossed the kitchen in a few steady steps. No hesitation. No overthinking. Just him.

He wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you in like it was the most natural thing in the world.

You exhaled softly, immediately leaning into him.

“You always do that,” you murmured.

“Do what?”

“Act like I’ll break.”

Darrel’s hand rested at your back, firm but careful. “No,” he said simply. “Act like I like having you close.”

That earned him a quiet laugh against his shoulder.

Life with Darrel Curtis wasn’t loud romance. It wasn’t flashy or dramatic. It was small things.

Him remembering how you took your coffee. You leaving notes on the counter because he woke up before you did. The way he always stood slightly between you and the street without realizing it. The way you always ended up leaning into his side on the couch without asking.

It was safe in a way neither of you had grown up expecting.

Later that day, you were both outside fixing the old fence out back. It didn’t really need fixing—it just gave Darrel something to do with his hands when he was thinking too much.

You were sitting on the porch steps watching him work when he finally said, “You’re staring again.”

“I always stare at you,” you replied.

“That’s not normal.”

You tilted your head. “Says the man who’s been re-nailing the same board for twenty minutes.”

That made him pause, then—very faintly—the corner of his mouth lifted.

He walked over, crouched in front of you, and brushed a loose strand of hair behind your ear. It was quick. Automatic.

You didn’t flinch.

Neither of you commented on it.

Instead, you just looked at him like that was exactly where his hand belonged.

Darrel stayed there a second longer than necessary.

“…You okay?” he asked quietly.

You nodded. “Yeah. Just thinking.”

“About what?”

You hesitated, then smiled a little. “How weird it is that I’m happy. Still waiting for it to feel like it’s gonna get taken away.”

That hit something in him, sharp and familiar.

He didn’t lecture. Didn’t try to fix it with words that didn’t fit.

He just said, “Ain’t going anywhere.”

And because it was Darrel Curtis, it didn’t sound like a promise he made lightly.

It sounded like a fact.

A few weeks after

It was late when you realized something was off.

Not in a dramatic way. Just small things.

You’d been tired more often. Coffee didn’t taste right some mornings. You kept forgetting meals in a way that didn’t feel like you.

Darrel noticed before you said anything.

Of course he did.

He was leaning against the bathroom doorway when you stepped out, already brushing his hair back like he’d been waiting.

“You’re quiet,” he said.

“I’m always quiet.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

You looked at him.

That was the thing about Darrel—he didn’t push, but he saw everything anyway.

You swallowed. “I think I should take a test.”

His expression didn’t change much, but something in his eyes shifted immediately. Focus. Grounded. Steady.

“Okay,” he said. “I’ll get one.”

“No,” you said quickly, then softer, “I’ll do it. Just… stay?”

He nodded once.

That was all.

No pacing. No questions. No panic spoken out loud. Just him sitting on the edge of the tub while you stood there holding something that suddenly felt heavier than it should.

Minutes passed like hours.

When you finally stepped out again, the test was in your hand.

You didn’t even need to say anything.

The look on your face was enough.

Darrel stood up slowly.

“…You sure?” he asked quietly.

You nodded, eyes glossy. “Yeah.”

He exhaled through his nose like he was steadying himself, then stepped forward.

Careful. Always careful.

His hands came up to your shoulders first, like he was asking without words.

You nodded again.

And then he pulled you into him.

Not tight enough to overwhelm. Just enough to anchor you both in place.

You let out a shaky laugh into his shirt. “We’re not good at reacting to things, are we?”

Darrel’s hand moved slowly up your back. “We’re fine.”

A pause.

Then, quieter, “We’ll figure it out.”

And for once, that didn’t feel like something uncertain.

It felt like something already begun.
