thinking about Law and Strawhat!reader on the way to Wano
his crew picks up that their captain is closer to you in a way that uncharacteristic. is it me or is captain glued to their side? they whisper.
the way his eyes linger on you during the festivities, like if he looks away, you'll disappear immediately. the way you immediately take his bread roll from his plate and he doesn't even flinch.
when packing up the Polar Tang for Wano, Law is immediately in captain mode. barking orders and checking maintenance updates three times over. he's telling Ikkaku to show the Straw Hats to their communal sleeping quarters.
until you step on board, and he immediately takes your bags from your hands. for you, he tells Ikkaku to show you to the captain's quarters. he quickly glances at you and with his slight nod, you know he's telling you make yourself at home.
the crew clutches their pearls at this.
and at supper, Law accompanies you while getting your food. he's immediately putting things that he knows you'll like onto your plate. he's filling your cup with your favorite drink and at perfect temperature. you don't have to lift a finger.
while eating, he has his arm draped across the back of your chair as you talk with your crew and his. everyone notices how whenever you move, Law isn't far behind.
finally at night, when he's done being captain—when he's done being the Surgeon of Death, Law climbs into his bed where you are already tucked in.
Law holds you and breathes in your scent. he toys with the idea of asking you to join him—to leave the Straw Hats and become a Heart Pirate. he wonders if you'll say yes, but Law cuts that fantasy short.
if you left your family and joined him, you'd be signing yourself up for a life of resentment against the tattooed man. Law would have you, but he wouldn't have your love anymore.
and so Law brushes your hair out of your face, and lets you curl into his neck. he'll gladly take this short window of time with you, to take care of you, and to hold you. he can only hope that he doesn't let go in his sleep.

"are you guys watching the stream?" i hear as i'm putting the finishing touches on the snack table as Zoro talks to Luffy on the phone. cold champagne, pretzels, sandwiches that Sanji brought...and it's only 9:00pm... 3 hours to countdown. i start to fidget a little.
"i mean, we watched a little of it—," Zoro starts to answer but gets interrupted. "ONLY A LITTLE?"
Zoro clicks his tongue, "dude it's a whole 24 fucking hours, i'm not watching the entire thing."
"we have actual lives, Luffy," Sanji grabs the phone from Zoro, "and we got our own New Year's shit to do."
Luffy whines through the phone, and i hear Usopp yell something in the background. i started to tune out their arguing as i glance at the clock again. i wonder when Law's gonna get here.
"waiting for something?" Nami says mischievously, "or rather...someone?"
"no idea what you're talking about." i roll my eyes as she throws her arm around me. of course i know what Nami's talking about, but i'm not gonna give her the satisfaction.
"let her be," Vivi says as she adjusts the balloons for the third time tonight. the damn things keep floating away. "don't act like you weren't the same when we started dating."
Nami scoffs and pokes Vivi's side. "thank you!" i say to Vivi while sticking my tongue out at Nami.
"though i really hope you make a move tonight," Vivi adds. Nami bursts out laughing as i gasp at her sudden 180, "i thought you were on my side!"
"come on, it's been a whole semester long of you crushing on this guy," Vivi says before taking a sip of her drink, "you need some action."
my face grows hot and i open my mouth to retort when there's a knock at the door. Nami grins, "speak of the devil!" the universe's timing is a joke.
i head toward the door and give everyone a look telling them to just be normal and most importantly, behave.
i open the door to see Law dressed in a simple black button up and his signature spotted jeans. phew. his eyes show a glimmer of surprise—as if this wasn't literally my apartment.
"Law! come in," i step to the side to let him in and he awkwardly steps inside. the sharp musky smell of his cologne does not go unnoticed.
i turn around to see everyone staring expectantly, Vivi's music playing lightly in the background. i motion for them to fucking cut it out and they immediately give their pleasantries.
"yo Luffy, i'm gonna hang up. Traffy just got here," Zoro says. "TRAFFY'S THERE? TELL HIM I SAY HI—!" Zoro immediately hangs up and throws his phone onto the couch.
Sanji and Vivi, ever the sweethearts, immediately start on becoming the perfect hosts. "grab whatever you like," Sanji says, gesturing to the spread on the counter. Vivi starts digging for board games and such.
"Sure," Law says, again awkwardly standing. he looks gigantic in the kitchen of this tiny apartment. i finally see the champagne bottle in his hand. "oh! let me take that from you," i start moving towards him.
"let's see what you got," Nami grabs the bottle from him and examines the label. Law deadpans at her straightforwardness. classic Nami. "he's got good taste. i approve," Nami says after a while.
Law glances at me at a loss for words. i shrug and usher him to the food. behind us, i hear Zoro and Nami arguing on what game to play.
"I forget how crazy your friends are," Law mutters. i scoff in fake offense, "like Shachi and Penguin are any better?"
"Hm, I'm gonna tell them you said that." i immediately turn and grab his bicep—again, wow— "you wouldn't!"
he only offers that goddamn smirk as he grabs food. that face is going to be the death of me.
soon the night turns into Sanji and Zoro arguing—who's surprised? "we should've known better than to play this when Mosshead can't spell," Sanji groans into his hands.
"it's my fucking name, why doesn't it count?" Zoro glares at the Scrabble board. Nami chimes in, "because it's a stupid name."
the room explodes with Sanji, Zoro, Nami fighting, and Vivi desperately trying to diffuse the situation. i glance at the clock, pretty close to countdown. then, i glance at Law, who's watching the chaos with an amused smile.
i tug at his sleeve and he looks at me with that weird look in his eyes. that look that i can never decipher. i gesture to my room, "want some quiet?"
"Very," he says as his face turns soft. now that's a look i've never seen on Law. we slowly make our way out of the warzone the living room and find shelter in my bedroom.
Law takes in everything—my decor and furniture, my vision board for photography on the wall—and i start feeling self conscious. he only caught a glimpse last time he was here, but we really only hung out in the common area.
the argument from the other group only sounds like white noise now that we're alone.
"You really hit the nail on the head," he says, gesturing to the vision board, "At least, from what I've seen."
"you think so?" i say quietly. my voice sounds too loud when it's just us two. Law looks at me, "I know so. Might know nothing about photos, but I'm not blind."
we look at each other for a beat. i feel the palms of my hand coat with sweat as i look for another conversation topic to jump to, "you having fun so far?"
he chuckles, the unfamiliar deep timbre settling in the room and warming my chest. "Yeah, fun is one way to put it," Law gestures to my desk chair and i nod. he takes a seat and glances at all my trinkets, "I usually don't get this much chaos in a night, even with Pen and Shachi."
"now imagine we get all of them in a room together—Luffy and Usopp too," i entertain. Law immediately groans and throws his head back, "Don't even start."
i immediately remember why i even brought Law in here, and definitely not for the nefarious reasons you think. "oh!" Law jolts at my exclamation. i go into my closet and start digging for that one particular bag—ugh, where did i pu- found it!
i shove it into Law's hands... ignoring how long his fingers are. "this is for you!" i say, failing to control my excitement. Law scrunches his thick black eyebrows, "For me? For what?"
i wave my hands at the gift, gesturing for him to open it. "your birthday present—well, late birthday, i guess—but it's not my fault since you never told me."
Law lets out a sharp exhale as a laugh. he opens the gift, and i immediately see his face drop. and so does my heart into my ass.
"do you not like it? is this not the right volume?" i titter nervously. "i wasn't sure if you already had it, but i can exchange it—!"
"Is this the fucking limited 1st edition of Sora?" Law drops the gift bag and carefully holds the sealed comic in his... tattooed and veiny ...hands. "Autographed?"
Law immediately stands and he towers over me, "How- what the fuck- how did you even get this?" my heart beats nervously, still not knowing why he's reacting like this.
"Y/N, this is- fuck. It's fucking amazing." my tension in my body immediately leaves, but the adrenaline doesn't.
"well, there's a comic store downtown and i did some promotional photos for them once—"
"you two hurry up and get out here, the countdown's about to start!" i hear Nami yell from the living room. my face flushes and i start fanning myself. "we'll be right there!"
"—anyways, the owner owes me big time so when you said your birthday passed i knew i needed to get you somethi—"
"Can I kiss you?"
the air that i already didn't have left in my body immediately leaves the room. i hear the countdown start outside. 10... 9.... 8....
"what?"
it's Law's turn to look breathless, flushed, and downright embarrassed. now this look suits him very well. "New Year's. I mean, kiss—Can I kiss you?" 7... 6...
i stand there stunned. come on, girl, just fucking MOVE. say SOMETHING. 5... 4...
Law stammers, which is unlike his usually cool demeanor, "We- I mean I've been doing this back and forth this whole semester- if I misread, I apologize, but—" 3... 2...
fuck it. i grab his collar and pull him down to my level. i'm going to climb this man like a tree even if my life depends on it.
the sudden motion catches him off guard and he grabs my waist as our lips meet. Law falters for a bit until he realizes what's happening, then he stabilizes.
outside? a cacophony of fireworks and "Happy New Year's!" rings out.
here, in my tiny college bedroom? my heart is exploding as one of Law's hands travels to the back of my neck and deepens the kiss. i meant for it to be a peck, but i am definitely not complaining. his goatee scratches my chin, and i can't help but let out a satisfied airy laugh.
unfortunately, the burn in my calves from tippy toeing to reach him wins over me, and i pull back. Law doesn't release his hold on me, and barely moves back.
i force myself to look in his eyes, and now i finally understand what that look means. "Let me take you out," he breathes out into the quiet room, the fireworks starting to die down.
"A real date- can I take you out on one?" i think Law would deny it until his last breath, but i could've sworn he sounded pleading.
i nod, "yeah, i'd like that." Law again looks surprised—as if his tongue wasn't just down my throat, "Yeah?"
"take me out on a real date," i confirm. and just to seal the deal, i pull him back for another kiss.
general notes

Sanji's long fingers tap on the cold countertops of the galley. he resists the urge to light one of his cigarettes in the enclosed space. you don't like the smell of them after all.
you and who was left of the crew had finally retrieved Sanji from Whole Cake Island, from the grips of Big Mom and the Vinsmokes. Sanji felt an immense gratitude for still being accepted back on the Thousand Sunny; Luffy and the others even greeted him back with welcome arms. despite that, the warmth extended to him stopped at you.
Sanji thought back to when he parted ways with you at Green Bit. your desperate plea for him to be safe, to be careful, and you'd make your way back to him. he kissed you gently and gave you his word.
what you didn't expect was for Sanji to not be waiting for you on the other side. you landed at Zou excited to see the rest of your crew, more specifically, to see him. instead, Nami had to painfully tell you that he had left Zou, and the reason left your mind reeling, confused and heartbroken.
since he left the shackles of his family, Sanji hasn't had the chance to speak to you alone. at least, until now. you stood up to leave the dinner table before Sanji slid a freshly made dessert to you—your favorite.
"stay?" he asked gently. before Luffy could complain that he wants dessert too, Nami dragged him out by the ear and gestured to Brook, Chopper, and Carrot to also take their leave.
with the door shutting behind them, the only thing left in the room is you, Sanji, and the heavy tension between you. the waves are hitting the side of the Thousand Sunny, making the room sway gently. you lay your eyes on the dessert in front of you, still standing.
Sanji gulps down the heavy guilt that's sitting in his throat. god, he wishes he could smoke the whole pack in his pocket right now. there's only the table between the two of you, but Sanji feels as if he's miles apart from you. honestly, he might as well be.
finally, you speak, "i'm not hungry." you push the plate towards him gently, but firmly. you turn to leave and Sanji blurts out, "can we please talk?" he knows he sounds more desperate than he intended to, but he'll do anything.
"what is there to talk about? i'm glad you're back and dinner was delicious, but- this is- i don't—," you take a deep breath to gather your words. "i understand why you did it, i really do, but it hurt. you hurt me."
Sanji's eyes flit to the floor and he bites the inside of his cheek. you cross your arms, putting more distance between you as he processes your words.
"darling, i had no choice. i didn't want to do any of it, i swear—"
"but you almost did. you were going to, if Luffy didn't stop you," you interrupted, still not meeting his gaze.
"it wasn't that simple, i was backed into a corner—"
"it was that simple though; you could've asked us for help. you know we would've helped you."
"i couldn't do that, i couldn't drag you into any of my problems. do you see how powerful they were? my family—"
"we are your family, Sanji!" you finally raised your voice. Sanji's words dissipate off his tongue, your eyes finally meeting his for the first time. he finally sees the emotions that you've been carrying by yourself. the love is still there—thank goodness—but it's overcome by hurt, pain, and the betrayal of his actions.
"who gives a damn how strong they were? you're one of us for god's sake—and to see you sell yourself off to them, to Big Mom, for that girl—," your voice cracks as the emotions make its way in the form of tears.
"how was i supposed to feel when i got to Zou and you're nowhere to be seen except for this?"
you dug a wrinkled paper from your pocket and threw it on the table. written on it was the note he left for the crew.
i'm off to see a woman,
be back soon.
-Sanji
Sanji feels the room spinning. he feels stupid to think that just because he's back, that everything will be okay again, that you'd forgive him and hold him in your arms again. the silence feels heavier than it ever has, and the waves feel stronger, making him feel uneasy on his feet.
this time, it's him who refuses to meet your eyes.
"i know exactly why you did it, but that doesn't change the fact that you were ready to leave me without so much as an apology. did you really think i'd forget the words you said to us, to me?"
he knows exactly what you're talking about. it was when you had just found Sanji, and he kicked your captain down in front of the Vinsmokes. he had called you low-class pirates and declared himself the prince of the Germa Kingdom.
not only that, but he had to look into your eyes—the ones that he had looked into so many times before and declared his love—and say that he never loved you, and he's better off marrying a woman of higher caliber. saying those words was akin to shoving shards of glass into his own mouth and swallowing them.
the dessert stays sitting on the table, no doubt getting staler by the minute. the chef in him wants to wrap it up, preserve it, and save it for another time. seeing it juxtaposed next to the crumpled note, Sanji almost scoffs. a measly attempt of an apology next to the thing that is very nearly disintegrating what's left of your relationship.
Sanji knows he has to let it sit, bask in the ugly anger and hurt that's in the room, and face it.
he takes in a shuddering breath and leans back against the counter, feeling as if he might collapse under your stare.
"there aren't- there will never be any words i can say that will make it okay. i was selfish to think i could handle it all on my own, and even more idiotic to think you all couldn't help me."
you wipe your tears as they silently run down your cheeks. Sanji wants nothing more to walk to you and wipe them himself, but he knows he doesn't hold that right anymore.
you don't stop him or walk away, so he takes it as a sign to keep talking.
"the things i said, the things i did," Sanji lets out a shaky breath, "it's unforgivable. i don't know why Luffy accepted me back, but what i do know is that i'll spend the rest of my life showing him that he made the right decision. and i'll spend even longer showing you how sorry i am."
your crossed arms turn into you hugging yourself as the tears run faster down your face, dripping off your chin.
"i swear to you, on my hands and feet, on everything: i never meant anything that i said and that i ever felt anything for her. i only tried to accept my fate," Sanji runs a hand through his hair and looks for his next words carefully. "you were all i thought about."
at that, you cried even harder. Sanji—a romantic at heart—kept speaking, desperate to let you know how much you kept him awake on those nights and how the thought of you kept him alive.
"i thought of you even as they kicked my ribs in, as they shackled bombs to my wrists- i thought of you so much i was hallucinating your face in every crowd, i smelled you in my sheets, i saw you in my dreams. even when i was up on that stupid fucking altar, i thought of you."
it was Sanji's turn to start tearing up, the trauma from his childhood and the whole ordeal hitting him head-on. the weight of the conversation pulled you to sit back down in your chair, teardrops falling down and soaking into the tablecloth.
Sanji tentatively steps forward. the table acts as a safe divider between you two still, but at least he's closer to you.
"my words mean nothing, i know, but i'll do whatever it takes—however long it takes—for us to be okay again. i'll start over again if i have to," he pleads, "i don't mean for us to forget it ever happened, that's not what i want at all, but i'll regain your trust again."
your sobbing dies down into sniffles and Sanji's wiping his tears with his sleeves, cufflinks scratching his pale cheeks. how much time has passed since dinner, Sanji doesn't know. 30 minutes? an hour or two? but he means what he said, however long it takes. he'd spend the rest of his life in purgatory if need be.
the silence settles into the cracks of the ship. the flag on the main mast stops fluttering and the vast ocean outside calms down. the waves aren't crashing anymore, the ship is now still and steady.
Sanji hears the scrape of you pulling the plate towards you, and the clink of your utensil picking up a piece of the dessert. he watches you bring the bite to your mouth.
his feet move before he can stop himself, instinctually sitting down across from you and watching you closely, as he's always done whenever he watches you eat one of his recipes for the first time.
"it's delicious," you say, covering your mouth as you chew. your voice is still fraught with the emotions from your conversation, but ever so observant, Sanji hears something underlying in your tone.
"my love?" he asks gently. he can't seem to say the rest of his question.
you stretch your arm across the table and hold your hand out to his, a gesture he immediately responds to. Sanji grabs your hand with both hands, as if his lifeline is flowing from your fingertips, just in case you snatch it away from him.
your gaze meets his, holding the same weight of emotions, except yours is melancholic whereas his is remorseful. you pull your lips into a tight smile and go for another bite of the dessert.
you squeeze his hand and quietly say, "we'll be okay."
at this, Sanji grasps your hand even tighter and brings it to his lips, placing a kiss on your fingers. he prays to all the gods and thanks that he's had the chance to prove himself to you again. Sanji knows it'll be a difficult road to walk from here on out, but he'd eagerly do it a hundred times over for you.
i'm still swimming w ideas of sanji angst from my last fic, so i wrote this! except i gave yall a happy ending this time, i think? is this happy enough for y'all 🤔
