Maybe the Spark Eaters are what happens to bots who've had their sparks removed with an extractor.
It would at least explain why everyone knew what they were.

White Energon (in TFP: Mercy) -> the Energon that Attracts Spark Energy
White energon was made up for Transformers: Mercy to explain the Spark Extractor. White energon is extremely rare because it is the blood of the One, the being that was Unicron and Primus in one body before they split in two.
Electrified white energon is activated white energon, meaning it will pull spark energy toward it. A small amount and a small charge will not kill a bot, as was the case with Rung’s necklace in Mercy (which could pull sparks from the stomachs of sparkeaters and capture ghosts). A large amount and powerful charge creates a superweapon, so we have the Spark Extractor (or more of them!).
Froid uses white energon to draw spark energy from energon. Another Mercy idea is that energon contains bits of spark energy (so eating energon also replenishes the spark). Froid extracted enough spark energy from dark energon to create a soul, and this is how Sunder was revived not as a zombie but as a living intelligent being.
White energon and sparks have a close relationship. Sunder carries white energon in his chest and some of it has contaminated his spark and body. But this is a good thing, for Sunder now also has a special connection with sparks. Sunder is able to see living and dead sparks wherever they are!
If you are wondering, eating white energon or injecting it into their blood will kill a bot!
Can you tell us what become of the Key to Vector Sigmia in Transformers Prime? Did it ever make it's way back into Jack Darby's hands?
Dear Key Keeper,
After the restoration of Cybertron, the remaining members of Team Prime donated most of the Cybertronian tech that they had found on Earth—spark extractors, the polarity gauntlet, the Phase Shifter, the Resonance Blaster, the Liquifier, and, yes, the Key to Vector Sigma—to the Cybertron History Museum, where they would be protected and maintained by civilians and other noncombatants. Although the Autobots intended this to be a goodwill gesture to symbolize that they were done with their war, Cyclonus was able to manipulate coverage of the events and frighten the citizens of Iacon into thinking that Prime’s supporters were using these goodwill gestures as a cover to flood the black market with illegal technology and restart the war. Though these rumors were baseless and nothing more than political mudslinging, it assuredly damaged their reputations and led to their placement on the blacklist of Autobots who continued to support Optimus Prime.
"ooooh may i study you?"
