one of my favorite things in how varian’s truth serum works, is it is said to not FORCE the drinker to tell the truth it strongly COMPELLS THEM, so as a normal fantasy truth serum works is in which a person will not realize they r tellinf the truth or not be able to fight back at all, varians shows in how it works it makes someone really WANT to, so much that it masks them
Not wanting to, like we see with him telling cassandra the stuff, is it works in the same way, AS WHEN HE GETS SO EXIDED HE WANTS TO TELL PEOPLE ABT HIS INVENTIONS.
This could be for two reasons
Reason 1, he designed it in that way so there is a slim chance somebody (him) could resist, since its based on the strong want, its a matter of willpower, why this didn’t work on himself could be because of his previous relations with cass, and him still somehwere thinking of her as a friend — thus wanting her attention, or him not being able to test it on himself when he was making it, because he was alone, and even if he drank it himself he would need a second person,
Or reason 2:
Since he was alone while making it, he only had himself to reference, and based it off when HE gets excited and wants to tell people things,
We see this with the gards, that one gard that overexplains his whole day in detail mirrors the way varian overexplains stuff when hes exided, where in a typical truth serum the gard would just say “oh i got cookies.”
this is the route i believe in, it would make sense for varian to make the serum based on his own actions, as he has only had himself or his father to reference for a long time,
