fam I am so damn happy to help!

okay so thing number 1: marvel is big! the marvel universe is huge and complex and it’s super ok to feel overwhelmed and not know where to start. but it is way simpler than it looks, i promise! cross my heart!

right so you can kinda split marvel into two categories!

#1: The Marvel Cinematic Universe

These are the movies! You’ve probably heard of a lot of these. Age of Ultron is a movie in the MCU, so’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man. They’re based off the comics but you don’t have to know anything about the comics to watch them, and loads of MCU fans don’t read comics at all!

It’s actually a rly good place to get into Marvel from! 

If you want a kind of MCU crash course, I’d watch Iron Man 1, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Marvel’s The Avengers (the 2012 one!) There’s loads of other films in it too, and this lovely Wikipedia articles lists them all in order if you scroll down a lil bit.

There’s also TV shows in the MCU (listed in that article too), but you don’t need to watch them at all to understand what’s going on!

Don’t stress about it! Most of the MCU films were written so even people who didn’t know anything about Marvel could enjoy them, so you can’t really go wrong! :-D

#2: Comics

The Marvel Comics universe is huge and super complicated, but luckily you so don’t have to know anything at all about most of it to enjoy comics! I know you’ve read Runaways without knowing much about Marvel, so you know this :-D There’s no right or wrong order to read different titles in, just make sure you’re starting with #1 of whatever comic you wanna read and you’re good to go! 

I like buying comics in trades (sometimes labeled volume ½/3/etc or called collected editions), which are books with a bunch of comics collected in them (these are what I lent you when you were reading Runaways). You can find these at lots of bookstores, usually in the graphic novels section– Indigo has lots of comics, and some smaller bookstores do too! All you have to do is ask, or, if you’re like me and can’t talk to bookstore workers to save your life, search until you find what you’re looking for.

Online is a great resource if there’s something you don’t understand– just google it! I promise you will find the answer to any comic question you may have lmao the Internet knows everything. Or just hmu and I’ll answer your questions.

cool comics to start with:

Ms. Marvel (high-school student and hyperenthusiastic fangirl Kamala Khan gets superpowers. adorkable and amazing. same artist as Runaways!)

Hawkeye (train wreck Clint Barton and badass Kate Bishop team up with a pizza-loving dog to defend an apartment building and road-trip to L.A.. this is the first comic I ever read. it’s amazing) 

Thor: Goddess of Thunder (different from the rest of these but charming in its own way– much more fantasy than the other two. Thor, the god of thunder, becomes unworthy to wield his own hammer and some chick scoops it up off the moon, becoming Thor in her own right.)

Secret Avengers (you might need to google a couple of things if you read this one before watching some MCU, but it’s so worth it. Maria Hill collects a team of elite agents, Clint Barton gets involved somehow, there’s an evil genius, alien babies, and salted caramel gelato. 11/10 tbh)

so yeah! for comics just pick one and start reading. you’re not gonna get everything at first and that is totally normal and okay! you’ll learn as you go!

a summary

really there’s no wrong way to get into marvel

ppl talk ur ear off about it like I just did but that’s ‘cause we love it and we want you to love it. sometimes it sounds complicated but it’s rly chill i promise

you should probably start with the MCU! watch some of the movies and you’ll get useful background!

if the MCU is enough for you that’s rad! lots of people are MCU fans but aren’t into comics. If you wanna read some comics, that’s cool too! just pick one up, and if you’re starting with #1 of any title at all, you’ll probably be cool!
