Speaking With Spirits

Speaking with spirits can be easy for some and more difficult for others. Whether you're a natural or someone who needs tools to receive messages from beyond the grave, it's important to make sure you keep yourself safe and be respectful of those who have passed on. Here are a few things I think are extremely important when speaking with spirits.

Opening A Circle This may seem very obvious to some, but others may not think to open a circle whilst speaking with the deceased. Whilst the likelihood of you coming across a dangerous spirit is small, trickster spirits are a lot more common than people think. It's important to keep yourself safe by opening a circle. There are many ways to open a circle, if you're unsure leave a comment on this and I'll make a post about how I personally do it but there are many posts about how to do so. It's also important to remember to close the circle properly too.

Being Respectful Remember that the spirits you're talking to are people too. They have lost their physical bodies but they are still people and they deserve the same courtesy that you would give someone who has a physical form.

Ask Questions If you're speaking to someone you knew when they were alive it's important to make sure they are who they claim to be. Ask questions that only they would know the answer to when speaking to them so you can confirm who you're talking to. This again is for safety reasons and also making sure that you're speaking with the spirit you wish to. If they aren't who you're looking for, you can always try again.

Extra Personal Opinion: Even within the world of witch craft and paganism the safety of Ouija Boards is debated. I personally have never gotten one to work though I have met people who claim to have worked with them successfully. I don't believe that Ouija Boards are evil or bad at all. I'm still not fully convinced they work in all honesty, but I do know that as long as you use them safely and make sure you take the right safety measures then you will be safe.

I also guess since this is like a public diary...? Might as well add this for y’all or the tiny amount of people who see this🙄 the other night I was in deep sleep and was dreaming. All of a sudden I heard a woman say “hey” and my name. (Mind you my roommate moved out so I’m all alone). I woke from a dead sleep because I thought I actually heard someone say something to me....this hasn’t been the first time I’ve been woken from my sleep👀

Reality Vs. Tradition- A Speaking With Spirits post

So recently someone questioned my logic...which is fair, but it has led me to clarify some points.

I have always maintained that spirits are independent beings that should not be controlled or enslaved. This person pointed out that some traditions said that you should control or enslave spirits when you want their help.

Well...I work with reality, not tradition and I will tell you that from a realistic point of view- any tradition that relies on slavery to get the job done sucks. No bound spirit is a happy spirit. (should you manage to bind one at all).

In that post I detail the kinds of spirits that it is possible to see. They can range from completely harmless to more powerful than you’ve ever dreamed. A powerful pissed off spirit can do damage. My guides are aimed at keeping people from pissing off spirits and calming down already pissed off spirits.

Hollywood horror paints all spirits as unable to be reasoned with and therefore creating a culture of fear associated with spirits. But on the contrary- spirits are much more rational that humans. They don’t have many of our worries or cares.

You might wonder why my guides fail to mention that one so important witch skill: banishing- Well, in all honesty, I can’t do it. You’ll have to find that somewhere else.

You see, I wrote these posts because my spirits wanted me to when they saw how much misinformation there was out there. They have been my only teachers and the last thing they would teach me is how to banish them. I can ward my home from outside spirits coming in...but the spirits who like to think of themselves as ‘my’ spirits, are here to stay. We have a very lovely life together even if they do not understand dating. They think that they should be ‘enough’ for me and I keep trying to tell them that yes...mentally, they are all I could want...tangibly, however...oh, well.

Edited to add- It was also pointed out to me that I leave little room in my system for debate so I tend to shut it down. I would like to address this. I am not expounding on a religious tradition that I live with. I am going by my real-life experiences with real spirits. It is valid that other spiritualists may interact in a different manner with their spirits. I have never met another medium I could compare notes with. Usually when I encounter a method I have never seen before I ask my spirits if it would work and they tell me yes or no and why...and that is what I go with.  When people send me asks about the best way to handle a spirit, I ask my spirits and go with that answer.

Spirit Basics 2- A Speaking With Spirits post

Here is part two to my introductory lessons on dealing with spirits.

Now, I know I mentioned this in my first post, but it bears repeating-

SPIRITS ARE NOT YOUR SERVANTS. They are not your inferiors, they are not less intelligent than you, they are not pests, or children.

Treat spirits as you would another human in the room with you. They deserve manners and respect. Talk to your spirits normally. Converse with them even if you can’t hear their responses in the normal way. Don’t blame every little thing that goes wrong in your life on spirits as if they are some kind of scapegoat. The most trouble a spirit has ever given me is playing hide and seek with objects when they want attention. Sometimes they will mess with radio reception as well. You can tell they are listening when an abundance of coincidences  start happening.

If you want to be left alone...just ask politely. The important part is actually vocalizing your request. The other day I read someone’s article where their idea of ‘banishing’ a bad spirit was to meditate and envision a white light cleansing every room in the house pushing the spirit out.

Well...spirits aren’t mind readers. Unless you are clairvoyant and can actually project your intentions outward to the spirit, all this does is teach positive meditation. But even if you are clairvoyant, you still have to actually tell the spirit what this magic white light means in that mental message. Spirits are not “dirty” so the idea of “cleaning” them doesn’t really compute to most spirits.

On that note, that is why I don’t bother with “smoke cleansing”. Now, spirits do like candles and incense. Fire and things that smell good get their attention, you if you really want them to listen to a polite request you can burn candles and incense when you are making the request. I usually use three candles and three sticks of incense for a serious request or if I wish to request a spirits help with a spell. They appreciate the fire and smell and the sacrifice you made of the ingredients. I usually use tealights because they burn themselves out and I don’t have to worry about them.

Now, on another note...bad energy build-up can cause a lot of bad luck and spirits often get the blame even though they are not at fault. To clear bad energy, the best thing to do is clean until everything is in as best order as possible then I use a cleansing spray with astringent qualities. (Lysol works in a pinch)

But here are two home made options:

1) sea salt dissolved into purified water that was kept outside in the sun on the day of the New Moon. (In a mason jar is fine)(Both the sun and moon are in the sky on that day making it water charged by both at the same time.) Place in spray bottle and spray.

2) sea salt dissolved in everclear or perfumers alcohol and put in a spray bottle. You can add any essential oil you like for fragrance.

Spirit Basics- a Speaking With Spirits post.

My main articles, speaking with spirits, tend to assume things I figured everyone knew…so I didn’t think to mention them. Oops, my bad. So here I am giving some spiritual background.

First of all…spirits aren’t what you think. Those that visit from beyond are split up into categories-

Echoes are the most common spirit that is actually seen by human eyes. Don’t ever be frightened, an echo is not a consciousness, it is a vivid memory captured in a place magically strong enough to hold it. Echoes are harmless and need no action on the part of the witch. I won’t tell you how to erase them because that is like erasing history.

Ghosts are conscious, but extremely rare (I’ll explain in a second.) A true ghost- someone who has been removed from the wheel of reincarnation as punishment. It is a very sad being… Not mean. The reasons you get kicked out are more tragic than evil. Treat any real ghosts you find kindly.

Finally we come to the ones we just call ‘spirits’- I’m not going to lie… This definition is broad. You see, a lot of things in the cosmos get bored, such as souls in between lives, the fey, mythical beings, all of the forgotten gods, and even some of the less busy major gods. There is just one rule- they can lie, but they can never tell you who they are. (Prevents people calling themselves prophets and screwing up world religion even worse.).

Rules of engagement-

Leave echoes alone, they are harmless.

Try to comfort true ghosts. Don’t ask how they died. Be polite and patient.(Note- You can not help a REAL ghost move on. Do not try. I am sure there are those who would argue with me, but I have my reasons.)

But if you have garnered the attention of a 'spirit’…then the first rule is always have manners and respect. Don’t blame everything that goes wrong in your life on them as if they were a supernatural scapegoat. Believe in them and they will help you through things.

Abigail Chon walked alone, pulling her jacket and purse closer. She breathed in the scents of those walking around her, feeling uneasy. Too many humans, serpents… Wolves. She preferred the company of her dog, Bones, and books. She was terrible at interacting with others.

But, that didn’t matter. Soon, she’d have answers. She pulled up her umbrella as the LA night began to shower. ‘Damn…’ She didn’t like the rain. It’d always make her smell like a wet dog, er wolf. Not exactly how she wanted to meet someone new.

As she approached the building, she searched for a certain name. When she found it, she pressed a button to signal her, and nervously asked, “I-Is there an Anette Boudreaux here?”
