Daily Shark Fact - 4/19/2025
Today's shark is the speartooth shark!
The basics: the speartooth shark (Glyphis glyphis) is a rare, unique shark, a member of the genus of river sharks! The three extant sharks in its genus are the only sharks known to prefer river waters (unlike sharks such as the bull shark, which can easily switch between marine and freshwater environments), though this species can also be found in near-shore marine habitats. Like the other river sharks, the speartooth shark is still very poorly understood thanks to its reclusive nature and preference for murky waters. Despite being requiem sharks (members of the same order as active reef sharks), speartooth sharks are slow-moving and sluggish, and their activities are unaffected by the time of day, indicative of the near-constant darkness of the deep rivers they prefer.
Conservation status: vulnerable. We know very little about the speartooth shark, but, like other river sharks, it's considered to be rare and has a very restricted range. Bycatch and habitat degredation are serious threats for this shark.
Today's fun fact: speartooth sharks have relatively small eyes and a lot of ampullae of Lorenzini (sensory organs that pick up on electromagnetic signals in the water), which (along with their dark, murky habitat) means that they probably rely almost exclusively on electrical signatures from their prey to hunt!

The Speartooth Shark or Glyphis glyphis is a rare species of river shark that inhabits only a small number of tropical rivers and adjacent marine waters in northern Australia and southern Papua New Guinea.
The species is currently listed as Critically Endangered under Australia's national environmental legislation, with a very small population and a restricted geographic range.
The speartooth shark is one of the rarest sharks on earth. They are so rare that they only live in the waters of Australia and New Guinea with a population of less than 2,500!! They're a critically endangered species.
Was that more than one fact? I dunno but enjoy!!

My March Mammal Madness round 2 portraits. I wanted to give them their own additional post, to highlight their special theme of “portraits with interesting framing devices:. With the spotted skunk piece, I decided I wanted to focus more on detailed portraits, but still keep them visually interesting. Some of these were made with less time than I’d like, but I made it a point to always keep to the theme.
