I’m gonna need to go ahead and do a “YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS SHOW” post about Vera in the next little while. It’s not a perfect show, but when a little British Drama set in Northumberland has better diversity in casting than basically anything currently on US tv (and doesn’t kill them off all the time?) and stars a fat, white, older woman who isn’t ~nurturing~ and her cute young DS (there are two). And while I’m only half way through the season 6 finale, there’s already a black, hijabi woman who has a major speaking role that isn’t centered around her religion. (Yet? I’m only halfway through.) Her presence is due refugee-hood given the current political stuff going down in the EU, but it’s just good contextual background?? And this is just one example? Like, since the beginning of season four, this series has been in OVERDRIVE with the casting choices. Plus, the old white guy on the show gets yelled at a lot and actually has a learning curve? It’s GREAT.
Also, the cinematography just GORGEOUS. Large stretches of flat, green land seriously do it for me (MIDWESTERNER) with the added sea elements and the color palette? <3 I really need to go on a driving tour of Northumberland at some point in my life. It’s just so lovely.
