Food journeys.

15 yo me would only have two of the foods I have eaten today on her radar: eggplant and green beans.

For lunch today, I had a vegan red Thai curry with jackfruit, eggplant, green beans, rice noodles, and a large glass of home-brewed Jamaica agua fresca.

I just think it is neat that I have learned about so much food I didn’t grow up with AND that there is so much more to learn about (and eat!)

Odd fact about me: I've not been to an in-theater movie since whenever the first Paul Rudd Ghostbusters sequel was in the theater. November 2021? IDK. I just haven't been all that interested in going. Cue my surprise when my mom (who's not been to a movie since... 2004? 2005? IDK, it was a second run of Hidalgo) calls me up and asks me to take her to an IMAX showing of The Odyssey.

Apparently, someone at her UU book club got quite passionate about it, so I'm apparently spending next Sunday afternoon watching a movie with my mom. 2026 remains a year of left-field strays.

I had a vanishingly rare experience with a restaurant this week. Remember when restaurant food tasted like food? Fresh? Delicious? Good quality? Yeah, me freaking either.

Color me stunned when I walked in to Thalaiva’s in Park Ridge for lunch this week. Got the eggplant tamarind curry (comes with rice), onion kulcha (made in a tandoor IN HOUSE AND FRESH), a freshly muddled and prepared mint lime soda, and a whole second entree of millet porridge. All were fresh and tasty and USED QUALITY INGREDIENTS. Plus, with tax and (20%) tip, it cost $58. Which was still a lot for lunch, but I have eaten four different meals from this purchase.

So. Locals. If you want some really tasty grub, hit up Thalaiva’s at 10 S. Prospect St in Park Ridge, IL. You can take the UPNW Metra to the Park Ridge station, which is across the street. There is also a TON of free parking nearby (after 11am), and several nice coffee shops if you want a post meal hang.

Y’all know I take my food seriously, so I am being quite honest when I assay the food was delightful.

I love asking people how their parents met. You always get an interesting reply. My best friend’s parents met on the relatively new internet in 1999. My other friend’s parents met at Burger King when one was the manager and the other was a regular customer. My parents met at the beach because they were neighbors in their rental houses, mom was on a church trip and dad was getting blackout drunk every night with his friends next door.

Me when I contact IT and tell them yes I restarted and followed any instructions I could but computer still angry and IT says they are escalating this because it is an actual issue: I am getting a good grade in service desk ticket. Something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

The christian family in these memes (which are absolutely all over facebook these days) genuinely do always look miserable. Who the fuck is relating to these stock mormon farm cultists. That is a couple who made love only once in pitch darkness with bags on their heads then celebrated the pregnancy with a feast of uncooked potatoes and warm tapwater. The baby seems intrigued though. Maybe only by the bottle of pills??

spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.

anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.

The worst part is that a lot of states are removing landline service in the next couple years, so people are going to be REQUIRED to get a cell. Therefore nullifying all legislated privacy laws for communication barring physical mail.
