SLA Announces Dissolution

The Special Libraries Association (SLA), a global organization dedicated to supporting information professionals and specialized librarians, has announced it will begin a dissolution process after 116 years of service to the profession. Since its founding in 1909, SLA has been a cornerstone for knowledge management, research, and information services across industries, providing invaluable networking, professional development opportunities, and advocacy for its members. After careful evaluation of the organization’s financial sustainability and the evolving needs of the profession, the SLA Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to begin the dissolution process of the Association.

Wow, I'm not a member of SLA but this seems like a pretty major move.

Announcement that voting is open for the 2015 SLA Board of Directors and on two proposed changes to the SLA bylaws.

Tomorrow is the deadline to vote for the 2015 Special Libraries Association (SLA) Board of Directors, as well as two proposed changes to the Association bylaws. Don't forget to vote!

Should I join the Special Libraries Association (SLA)...?

I've been pondering this for a while. I live in the UK and am a Chartered member of CILIP (and I have no plans to leave before anyone starts to worry!), but they focus primarily on public and academic libraries. I work in neither sector. Although CILIP is going through a tough time right now, I like the direction the organisation is taking. What I've read and seen of Chief Exec Annie Maugher (@anniemaugher on Twitter) has impressed me. BUT, membership of the Special Libraries Association (in addition to CILIP) does look like it offers a number of additional benefits. I like the look of Click U, and the webinars and CPD opportunities it offers. I also like the idea of getting a more international perspective. On the downside, it's another expense and I'm not rolling in cash. How many of their courses and activities are free to members? I know I'm jumping the gun a bit on Things 6 and 7, but I wondered if anyone reading this had any knowledge of SLA, and why it might (or might not) be worth me joining?
