My World Monday, Theran specific words
Since Stag has an account now, I figure I should explain some of the words specific to Thera, as he may end up using them occasionally. To start, the words gay, lesbian, bisexual, and straight do not exist. I wanted something different for Thera, something more inclusive. So here we go!
Thera is a more hunter based society than Earth and the gender roles expected of each person are very different. Instead of defining a person's interest by what they are and what they are into (ex: gay = man -> man) they use different words to describe what a person prefers to "hunt".
Keet. If you remember from the zoology post, keets are herbivores that are nearly extinct. Also, in order to be prey on Thera and survive, you have to be really fast, agile and evasive, making them tricky to catch. So if a person says they are a keet, what they are saying is that they are interested in women.
So to follow the equation above, keet = person -> woman. Deshi is a keet. You haven't met her, but Valin is a keet. (A woman who likes women.) Thera cares less about what you are and more about what you "hunt", so both Deshi and Valin are keets despite them being different genders. They see no difference between a man interested in women or a woman interested in women. They both like women. What else matters? **Joke at the end.
Mers. Mers were carnivores that are also nearly extinct on Thera. They were wily and patient and strong. If a person is a mers, they are into men. The princess is a mers, and so is Master Diette, who is in the Second Fragment and no one knows yet, haha. Mers = person -> man.
Zoiya. The last word they use to describe sexual preferences is zoiya, which is an omnivore on Thera, and as that implies, this means you either like both men and women or have no preference. Zoiyas are very versatile, hunt and are hunted. Stag is a very proud zoiya. And later, when she's older, so is Panko. ^^
A little bit of history.
Thera was trying to raise awareness for the species close to extinction and started using keet, mers and zoiya to describe many aspects of life. Clubs actually grew the most attached to the terms and started using them regularly and it stuck. The only club I've named using the words is "Mers Merriments" (a place Stag hits up a few times in his origin book) and it is now weird if a club doesn't have one listed. You are either a keet club, a mers club, or a zoiya club (which is generally most of them).
A side thing: Thera doesn't have terms like asexual, aromantic or hypersexual, but it is assumed that if you are not in a club that specifically caters to "hooking up", then you're probably not interested in finding a special someone at that place and time. Clubs are very common and will often contain a bar, a sizeable dance floor, a sort of stage for various forms of entertainment (anywhere from live music to strippers), and some of the fancier ones have rooms for rent. For, you know, reasons. (Deshi totally accidentallys himself into one in book 5… Great scene. 😆) They often have age limits and restrictions to these clubs.
Then there are two other words to describe the in-betweens.
Keezo. Used to describe people that for all intents and purposes prefer women, but may occasionally be with a man. This is Mythren.
Zoimer. Used to describe people that for all intents and purposes prefer men, but may occasionally be with a woman. This is... technically a spoiler so I can't tell you. 😏
Other words.
They have comparable technology to Earth made with much less metal and also have different names for things. There aren't any vehicles in Thera (that I've made yet, maybe later but they won't be cars. I do have ideas for a type of train though…) because of how rare metal is. The only things I've named are MDPs, mobile data processor which is the standard computer/laptop/ipad type of item and displayers, our televisions/monitors. They also have "internet" but I can't remember what they call it. I think it's the network.
Unlike on Earth, every electronic device is automatically connected to the network and you actually have to get a specially designed MDP to not be on the network. Hummes runs the network like Google runs the internet on Earth. For the most part, they have their hands in nearly everything in some places, if not most.
I won't go into it here because it really deserves its own post, but Therans will occasionally refer to heteronormative couples as traditional and homosexual couples as non-traditional when it comes to raising children, but only in the case of raising children. More on that later.
And last but not least, devocha.
I played around with Google translate for hours to make this word. It is an insult. It was created by Hummes to try and create tension within the kingdom of Solara during wartime. Devocha specifically refers to a non-magical person, hypocritically aligning themselves with magical people. For example, the Solara royals are all devocha because they are non-magical, and yet they rule Solara, the magical capital. Hummes infiltrated Solara and spread around the word devocha by saying things akin to "a devocha has no right to rule persons with magical abilities. What sense does that make?" This gave a lot of Magics an inflated sense of importance and this tactic nearly worked in creating a civil war within Solara. But then the first Carroll came by, bestowed with the Peace Bringer, and brought an end to that. Even so, the word stuck around and non-magics receiving training at Solara castle were often teased for being "devocha". People often forgot that the Solara royals were also, technically, devocha, but royals were always different because they're royals. And Stag was among the ridiculed. (Small piece of Second Fragment for ya!)
And that's about it. I'm sure more words will come up eventually, but I don't foresee too many of them.
For future My World Monday posts (send an ask if you'd like to see something sooner rather than later, but I'll go through them all eventually):
-The Council of Marka
-Economics of Thera
-Dynamic of Hummes (the city)
-Dynamic of Kares
-Dynamic of Marka
-Dynamic of Estes
-Dynamic of Solara
-Education system of Solara - including Earth age comparisons
-Fighter types among the kingdoms
-Traditional vs non-traditional children
-Hummes/Solara conflict
-Magic system
**Bonus joke: a woman dressed up like a cowboy walks up to a bar. A cowboy turns to her and says "well what are you supposed to be?" And she responds, "I'm a lesbian. I think about women, I dream about women, and I have sex with women."
The cowboy thinks about this for a while and eventually leaves the bar. Later, someone walks up to him and says, "what're you, a cowboy?" And the cowboy responds, "nope, I'm a lesbian. I think about women, I dream about women, and I have sex with women."
I knew this joke before I came up with the sexual preference terms of Thera, and it didn't necessarily inspire the idea, but it incorporates it really well, I think. Again, what does it matter if you both like women?
Have a good day, everyone. And thanks for reading! ^^

I think about all kinds of things. Everything. Curiosity. I had a teacher, Mr. Wachs. He evoked that kind of curiosity from me. Talking to you makes me want to feel that again. To live. To love. To exist. Talking to you just makes me think. Stars on my eyes again. It feels hopeless, but I like to forget about that when I talk to you.

Report on the first meeting of Logophilia
A couple of us guys checked out the Brooks Room at the Bend downtown public library and did a test run of a potential discussion group we named Logophilia – The love of words and word games. Words can be fun, funny, functional, fabulous, felicitous, fictitious, fake, phony. – Join us in conversation about words…weird, wild, wonderful words.
Our intent is to have a theme for each meeting, and this…
