Typography Tuesday: More Hamilton Wood Type
Last week we presented a facsimile we recently acquired of the 1884 Hamilton & Katz type-specimen book, Specimens of Holly Wood Type. In relation to that, today we offer another item we acquired after Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum director Jim Moran participated in our annual Ettinger Book Artist Series on Typography Tuesday, November 15: Specimen No. 4 of the Hamilton Wood Type Archiving Program. As the colophon notes:
It was designed and printed by The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin in December 2012, using Latin Extended which was first shown as wood type by Hamilton and Katz in their 1884 specimen book [noted above].
The broadside was printed in an edition of 500 copies on Utopia U1X Matte 100 lb. Cover stock made by Appleton Coated in Combined Locks, Wisconsin. This copy is an artist’s proof signed by the printer Stephanie Carpenter, who is the Museum’s Assistant Director. The Museum’s website offers this bio of Stephanie:
She is a graphic designer, letterpress printer, and book artist. At the museum she teaches letterpress and bookmaking workshops, serves as archivist and in-house printer, directs social media, updates the website, coordinates volunteers and interns, and arranges event and conference organization. She is a graduate of the graphic design masters program at Indiana University.
Excellent work, Stephanie (both at the Museum and on this specimen sheet)!!
