Long shot

I thought I was merely taking a photo of a pleasure boat pulling a water toy. I was ...I did ... But, as often happens with my fancy camera, I got a little something extra - a happy little photo bomb.

Not until I saw it on my Mac screen did I realize Spectacle Reef lighthouse was in the picture. There it is on the horizon, toward the right side of the top photo.

The amazing thing here is that Spectacle (shown at close range in the bottom photo) is about 12 miles out into Lake Huron from the deck of our cottage, which is where I stood when I took the photo.

That puts it halfway between Michigan's Upper Peninsula and our beach.

Huron tragedy

It seems that Spectacle Reef lighthouse, 11 miles or so out in Lake Huron, is a long way from human drama.

However, it so happens that Spec, the guiding light visible from our Lake Huron cottage, has a fascinating and tragic tale to tell.

It involves an Air Force pilot, a crash landing and the pilot’s struggle for survival in the icy no-man’s land halfway between Michigan’s two peninsulas.

Reporter Tanda Gmiter tells the story in a recent piece in the Grand Rapids Press.
