Bemerton is named after Bemerton Street in northern King's Cross. In the 19th century, this area around the railwaylands of northern King's Cross become synonymous with Victorian overcrowding. According to the 1862 article On Overcrowding in London; And Some Remedial Measures, there were said to be "spread across the four levels of one house, 34 people of all ages".
Much of Bemerton Street and the surrounding area was demolished in the 20th century, as part of wider London 'slum clearance', including the infamous Beaconsfield Buildings (nicknamed 'the Crumbles').
