maze women 2023: free space
so i got carried away with my fic for this space and as it turns out i will not be able to finish the whole thing in time for posting it all at once before midnight, which makes me sad as i am SO CLOSE. however it said on the rules that WIPs were allowed and i refuse to not get bingo so i will post a snippet here.

You’ve never been to a park at night, but this one feels safe enough. It’s well-lit, there’s lots of cars and people nearby, and you don’t see nearly as much broken glass and discarded cigarettes as there were at the local park you grew up near.
Thomas books it for the swings the second he turns off his car, Brenda excitedly following. He’s been a little reserved up until now, so this change of energy is amusing. Alby and Harriet calmly walk over and take opposite seats on the see-saw, riding it as they have what seems to be a semi-serious discussion on the upcoming election. You figure it’s best to leave them to it.
You lean against the car, watching your new friends with a mix of fondness and aching. You haven’t been to a park in a few years, since Aris grew out of it and Chuck pretended that he grew out of it, too. You fiddle with your hands, unsure of what to do. It feels weird to start swinging or sliding without your brothers, without a good excuse.
After a little while, you start looking out at the city, watching the cars go by. You grew up in the suburbs, so this has been another change to adjust to, even if it’s not the campus. You sigh, feeling out of place.
“Hey,” Brenda suddenly says, now next to you. You turn to her, and her eyes are wide with a youthful sort of boldness. She grabs your hand. “Come on.”
You would say she drags you along, but the truth is you run with her willingly, like it’s something you don’t have to think about or put effort into. You probably should have thought about it, since you’ve only met her once, but you don’t. Instead, you just watch the wind fly through her hair as she runs.
