After Puzzle and Dragon (PAD) had entertained me with its Puzzle element within its RPG/Card Collection game, now Spellfall is my favorite game today. Not only because of its puzzle, but the RPG element is quite what i'm looking for in RPG for mobile casual games.
Spellfall uses elemental magic to attack the enemies, with this elemental magic to be matched for its puzzle. The trick is, the match will be more effective of course, when you match more than three, or three in a T, L, or cross shape. I even found it more useful when combining in those T, L, and cross shapes.
The graphic itself uses mostly 3D and have a smooth animation for my opinion. It's enough for this kind of game. What I don't really like, is mostly the UI. It needs some times for me to be used to the UI and comfortable with it, which is not a really good thing. Other than that, I don't really have any problem.
Oh, perhaps the price could be a problem to many people, because they cost so much, and you get a little, but c'mon, it's a free game. When you can't purchase any item from them, how about using your skill more to the puzzle rather than to complain about everything, right?
So, here is my overall scores :
Gameplay : Works and challenging for me, so 5/5
Story : Not that any special, so 2/5
Graphic : The UI is nah for me, so 4/5
Sound : Suited to the game, so 4/5
Want to replay or not : For the stages, not really. After beaten, the stages are different and sometimes they come up with weaker monster. Not really worth to play more than once, even if you can't beat the next monster. So, it's 1/5
Continuity : Yes for me, 4/5
Total : 3.3/5
Don't hesitate to play this game, guys. Try it once, because my friend who doesn't like puzzle keeps on playing this game. If you like Puzzle and RPG, this game can hook you for its gameplay.
... SpellFall is a cleaner, leaner, dressed up version of a PC game I played for hours: Puzzle Quest. Essentially, it's a jewel matching game with RPG elements. Bejeweled meets Diablo II. I started playing obsessively, choosing to game on my phone instead of hoping on to World of Warcraft when I had a chunk of time to play.
The honeymoon was lovely, especially after I broke my rule and spent some actual money on in-game currency — I wanted to support the game because I enjoyed it that much.
Unfortunately, the honeymoon was ruined by a recent patch and the game I enjoyed was turned into one I now play in utter frustration...

TBH I think the only reason I haven't bothered to delete this game off my phone is morbid curiosity about what happens when I get all the "free premium" items. (AKA if you play for 20 days in a row, you get a free item that... OTHERWISE COSTS YOU $80??!?!?!?)
Because I'm curious as to what they're going to be having for people after that, if anything.
Since they completely broke the game mechanics an update ago. So, I mean, it's not like the story keeps me interested--since it's impossible to progress because they fucked with everything.
And they are fucking offering a fucking sword. It is a legit weapon DLC. On a mobile phone game. That they are charging $130 for. Who in their right minds pays $130 for a sword in a mobile phone game. That much money nets me a physical game for a console that comes with a mini-OST and/or a steel bookcase, an artbook, and 9-inch or so statue and sometimes other assorted items.
A bit of an odd thing to put up today, I'm aware, but I've been enjoying playing this game for the past month or so on my iPad mini, so I figured I might as well shill it a bit. "Spellfall" is a creation of Backflip Studios -- they're the same people behind "DragonVale," another game I go on about a lot on here. While "DragonVale" is a dragon-themed park sim, "Spellfall" is -- well, I've seen "puzzle RPG" applied to it, and I guess that makes the most sense. The backstory is that there's this event called Spellfall that happens every so often, where the world is shrouded in darkness and monsters come out to play, aided by this thing called "Corruption." However, Spellfall also awakens magic in the world, and certain people who were born at twilight and have the right bloodline -- Duskwalkers -- can use this magic to fight monsters. The protagonist is a young boy (nameless in game; I call him Eric Embers) who recently came into his legacy as a Duskwalker and has to fight off monsters, recover a prophecy, and save the world.
Okay, so, how does this game work? Well, there's a big old map screen, subdivided into sections that have to be cleared. In each section there's a certain number of monster encounters, each of which unlocks another in a chain, until you get to a final "boss" monster. Depending on the area, monsters may be themed around a certain element. There's five main elements in the game -- Plant, Fire, Cold, Water, and Energy. The duskwalker uses these elements to fight the monsters. How?
Basically -- by playing "Bejeweled."
That's right, the actual fighting is a match-three-or-more game. XD Basically the idea is that you match up the different runes in chains, which hits your opponent with that kind of spell. Longer chains or double-chains (matching up a square shape or a plus sign) give you "convert" tiles, which when put into another chain changes all the runes in the directions of the arrows on the convert tile into that kind of spell. You can also have enchanted runes, which are glowy and have special effects that play at the end of your current turn. You have a set number of moves to hit the creature, after which it gets a turn to hit you, and so on and so forth until somebody's HP is reduced to zero.
Some fights are a little more complex in that you have to fight two monsters one after the other. Fortunately, there's another category of runes that you equip on your personage or your weapon (yes, you're using magic, but the game insists you have one for attack damage -- assume it's necessary for channeling your spells) that either give you buffs, like a chance of extra moves at the end of your turn, or an increased chance to critically hit your opponent, or special powers, like the ability to heal yourself or poison your opponent for a set number of turns. How many you can have equipped depends on your armor and your weapon, up to what I think is a maximum of ten. Armor and weaponry come in many flavors, and may have extra bonuses, like resistances against a certain element. My Eric is a steampunk wizard thanks to the Mechro Plate armor. :D You get better armor, weapons, and runes as you progress through the areas and level up your magic -- though these all cost in-game gold at the store, which you visit after every fight. You gain gold by killing monsters, matching up gold pieces in the fights themselves, and clearing areas, which produce money for you afterward. Areas can be recaptured, but if you clear them again, their gold output is accordingly boosted. (And you can buy it for real money, but seriously, don't bother. Once you get to the good stuff, you should have enough to actually afford it just from fighting dudes.)
Also -- there's a rewards system. If you log into the game each day, Backflip gives you a present -- in order, experience points, gold, a free full charge on all your equipped abilities, rune points (which level up your equipped runes into even better versions), and a free item of increasing awesomeness. Do this for twenty days straight, and you'll get a huge elemental sword with awesome damage that normally costs some insane real-world scratch. I've got Eric using the Electric one, and it is niiice, especially against water monsters.
So -- yeah. If you like matching puzzles, RPGs, and a story that's actually rather interesting (each encounter has flavor text that helps build up the world), I can definitely recommend this game. If that weren't obvious by the darn BOOK I've just written about it. Available in the iTunes store! (And hopefully soon for Android; they keep saying it will be. . )
Spellfall – Puzzle RPG is the latest creation by Backflip Studios, the fantasy geniuses behind PlunderNauts and DragonVale. Spellfall combines elements of match-3 games and RPG arcade fighting. By matching 3+ tiles, you create spells that hit your opponents – who happen to be evil monsters. Comparisons to games like Pokemon are hard to ignore when it comes to the fighting style and look of the…
