I am writing an Education post for two reasons: One is that I want to share a few spelling games that I’ve used with my academic competition team, and the other is to ask for more. Most of what I’ve found was very elementary-focused (like write the words in glitter glue and trace them with your finger!), which isn’t great for 6th to 8th grade competitive spellers.
Anyway, so the first one comes from this blog and it’s called Bam! Taking those rules and making them into a projector-friendly image is all I can take credit for, but here it is:
Another thing that I’ve done sparingly is actually a first grade activity: Roll and Spell (out loud). There’s a list of 6 different odd ways to spell your word out loud and you roll a die to determine which one you’re using. My middle schoolers liked it once or twice, but I don’t think I’d want to use it frequently with them. A problem with this resource is that the store I found it on shuts down in like 5 days. I have the PDF, but I don’t want to post it without the permission of the teacher who made it.
And really, that’s about it! The kids love Sparkle, but it’s only fun with a few kids, and I don’t always have more than 3 or so at a practice.
So if you have great and fun ideas for recreational spelling, please please please reblog and add them!
