a/n: hiii 😭😭 at the end of writing this I was literally sobbing so take that how you will
You never thought, working at a small cafe in Quantico, Virginia, that you'd meet your future husband, let alone after you swore no more guys. You cut your hair, short-short, like a “guy” haircut. You had told yourself that maybe you should just give up on dating, or try being lesbian, you'd try either or. But then you met Spencer Reid, a sweet nerd you'd never expect to be into. All the guys you'd dated in the past were assholes, guys who your father disapproved of, especially with your father being in the FBI. Who's your father? None other than David Rossi. I know, I know, he may seem like a shitty dad, but he was actually the best.
When your mother gave up and just gave you to him, he quit his job at the FBI, he raised you to be the best you could. Obviously, you carry a gun on you at all times, you never know, especially because your dad wants you to. When he went back into the BAU, he made friends with Aaron Hotchner, who became a sort of uncle to you.
You and your father share a lot with each other, you'd tell him about your newest boyfriend, then cry in his arms when he dumped you. You'd talk to him about work, then he'd take you to his lake house when work got too stressful. You spend a lot of time together, especially at the lake, you go fishing, swimming, shopping, you two even cook together. Well, of course you do, your Italians.
But you met Spencer from work. You work at a cafe that is open at like all hours. You have a switch shift, meaning sometimes you work days, sometimes you work nights. Spencer has learned your schedule, he only goes in there when you're there. You'd never expect to fall in love that deeply, especially with a scrawny nerd who can barely say a normal sentence without adding some sort of statistic.
That's when Spencer realized he was falling for you, ten times harder. Derek noticed first, how Spencer would be just barely distracted while on a case. How he was always eager to leave and go somewhere. So, naturally, Derek followed him, followed him to the cafe that Spencer would sit at, very poorly pretending to read a book, when really, he was watching you. He would watch you work, watch you in your element, watch how gracefully you move, how you have a rhythm to it all. He studied you, analyzed you, learned every detail of your body, the small pudge of your stomach, the same two hair times you wear on your wrists even though you can't pull your hair up, the rubber ring you wear on your left middle finger you mess with when your stressed, the way the light hits your face just right at sunset making your skin glow in a magical way. He noticed how your glasses were just slightly crooked just barely, how you sometimes roll your right wrist after you've done a bunch of orders. He noticed everything.
Derek ordered a coffee and watched Spencer watch you. Derek saw that you knew pretty boy was watching you, and when you'd turn around you'd blush and smile to yourself. So he goes and sits next to Reid, “You like her,” is the only thing coming out of his mouth, making Spencer jump.

The next morning is when he accepts defeat, he goes up to Rossi and practically begs him for advice. He tells him about you, and about how much he likes you, tells David that Morgan told him you liked him back. Rossi tells him to be himself, buy her flowers, wait until your break and offer to buy you lunch. So he does.
He goes out, finds the prettiest flowers, hesitates before he walks in, buys his usual coffee which you gladly make, then asks when your break is. You tell him in a few minutes, so he asks what your suggestion for a good lunch is and you suggest your favorite. He buys it and sits down. Once your break rolls around, you go and sit in front of him, he slides the plate in front of you, “I bought it for you..” he looks down at the flowers then slides the bouquet across the table, “I also got you these,” he smiles and rubs the back of his neck.
You giggle and gently take the flowers, he watches as you eat so delicately, like the food could crumble in your hands.
You pick up a good conversation, talking about movies and TV shows, really getting to know each other. You act like you've known one another for a thousand years. When you get off work, he takes you for a walk at sunset. He watches as you talk adamantly about the Vampire Diaries and how it's way better than Twilight, how at the end of Twilight the Winchester brothers, from Supernatural should have gone in and killed them all. But he's more focused on the way your skin is glowing, how the light brings out your eyes. He walks you home, taking you to your door.
You turn around before going inside, “I really did enjoy today, Spencer. We should have another date sometime soon,” you cup his cheek and place a gentle kiss on his other cheek, hesitating before going inside. For a few minutes Spencer just stands there, careful touching the spot you kissed his cheek, not wanting to rub it off. He smiles before walking home himself.
Inside, you quickly call your dad to tell him about what happened, when he picks up you squeal, “Daddy! You'll never believe what just happened!” He chuckles at your excitement.
“What happened, pumpkin?” you can practically hear his smile.
You squeal again and he hears your feet kicking, “Remember that guy I said I liked? The one that comes to the cafe only when I'm there? The nerd? He took me out on a date!!!” You scream into the phone and your father laughs.
“I take it, it went well?” he asks even though he knows the answer.
“He's not like any of the other ones,” you nod even though he can't see you, “He's gentle, and sweet, and kind, and ahhhhhh,” you flop dramatically on your bed. “He bought my lunch, bought me flowers, took me out for a sunset walk, then walked me home!” You're excited because you've never had a first date go this well.
He chuckles and sounds happy, “I'm glad you had fun, pumpkin. I hope this one works out,” he sounds genuine.

And everything did work out, you had more dates with Spencer, you really got to know each other, and started actually dating, and made it official. Then David found out that the Spencer you kept rambling about was the same Spencer he works with.
After weeks of begging, you finally agree to get Spencer to meet your dad, you have to prepare Spencer. “Alright,” you start as you fix his tie, “ call him Mr. Rossi, unless told otherwise,” Spencer would have questioned the last name but there's other Reid’s out there he's not related to, so he didn't say anything. “He's Italian, so thank him for the food, tell him it's good. Answer honestly, and don't lie, he can tell when someone's lying, it's his job,” you smile and lead a terrified Spencer to the car.
When you get there, you just walk in, leaving your heels at the door, Spence follows hesitantly. When you get into the kitchen you hug your dad, who then turns around to shake Spencer's hand but pauses when he sees Reid. He drops his hand.
Spencer tilts his head, “Rossi? Since when did you- you have a daughter?” He rubs the back of his neck. You're confused.
“Yeah, you're dating her,” David responds. “Welp, this is what I was hoping wouldn't happen, I guess you're better than Derek. Let's just eat,” over dinner, Spence and your dad explain that they work together, on the same team.
Eventually he gets over the fact that the team's genius ended up dating his daughter. It just gives him more things to tease Spencer about. When they're on a case, Spencer would call in, checking on you, and Rossi would jump in, saying hi to his favorite daughter. Morgan and everyone else gives him a hard time, saying they wanna meet the future Mrs. Reid, making Spencer blush.
Then you do meet the team. You go in to bring Spencer lunch from the cafe. Get directed to the BAU and head to Spencer, everyone notices when you walk in, Hotch just smirks. You go behind Spencer, wrapping your arms around his shoulders, kissing his cheek and setting the bag down, “I brought you lunch,” you ruffle his hair before straightening up, waving at Hotch, “Hi uncle Aaron!” You run up the stairs and give him a hug. Then you go into your father's office and set down another bag. You brought him lunch as well, knowing he'd get jealous.

A year passed, you and Spencer moved in, found a routine, and stayed happily in love.
Then shit hit the fan. They had a case in Quantico, someone was kidnapping women and torturing them with knives and guns. Before Spencer left in the morning, he told you to be extra careful and to keep your gun on you at all times. That day you needed to go grocery shopping, so you put your gun on your belt and slid your pocket knife in your pocket. The only issue: all the victims looked like you. So, every hour, either Spencer, Aaron, or your dad, would call in to check on you. But at one in the afternoon, you didn't pick up. Spencer ran to Garcia, telling her to track your phone, it was in the middle of the grocery store parking lot. Spencer and Derek drove to the parking lot, found your phone, but didn't find you. Spence just about lost his mind. When they got back everyone started working ten times harder.
They did everything to look for you. Meanwhile you were fighting other battles.
You were taken to a strange place, you have no idea where because you were knocked out. You wake up chained to the floor, your head pounding from him hitting you with the butt of a gun. Once your vision clears back up, you observe your surroundings, tugging at the chains to test their strength. You take a few breaths before looking for a way out, measuring your odds, hoping Spence or Uncle Aaron, or your dad could find you. Then footsteps started coming down a hall, towards the door you were behind. You prepared as the door slowly creaked open. A tall, burling man stands there, a gun in one hand, a knife in the other.
“What do you what?” You try to keep the shaking in your voice to a minimum.
The man just chuckles, “You,” he says before stepping in, closing the door behind him. Before you can comprehend it, he's right in front of your face, his knife stabbed into your abdomen, as he lets go of the knife, still inside you. He draws another one, sinking it into your thigh, a scream echoes through the room as he twists then pulls the knife back out.
He does this, again, and again, and again, and again. When he's done, you're shaking, sweating, trying to keep your eyes open. He leaves for a minute, then returns, throwing bandages at you. You weakly grab them, wincing as you wrap them around your abdomen and leg and arm. When he comes back in, he's in a panic, frantically unchaining you, grabbing you, pointing a gun at your head, and holding you in front of him. You can barely hold yourself up, tears running down your face at the pain in your body. Then you hear footsteps above you. Spencer.
You scream, as loud as you can, he clamps his hand over your mouth, you bite down. You slide your hand into your pocket, finding your knife still there. Despite your body's protests, you spin around, digging the knife into his dick, twisting and taking off running. Well, you more so, stumble, you fall, pushing yourself back up and still looking for an exit. Moving as quickly as you can, making as much noise as you can. You look back and see the man stumbling after you. You round a corner and see the BAU team, stopping for a second, then you see Spencer running forwards, motioning downwards, you can't hear him over the ringing in your ears. He looks panicked, then you turn around and see him right behind you, pointing a gun, and firing, the bullet hitting you just below your chest.
You hear Spencer and Rossi scream your name. They shoot the man right as he shot you, Spencer rushes over, catching you, slowly lowering you to the ground. You grab onto his vest as tightly as you can.
“I- I lo-” you try to speak but you're choking on something.
Spencer quickly shushes you, “Shh, shhh, don't try to speak, just focus on staying awake,” you cough, blood coming up. Rossi screams for the paramedics. You refuse to let go of Spencer.
“I lo- love you,” you manage to choke out, tears running down your face, “I'm- scared,” you cling to him tighter, “I- I dont- wa- wanna d- die,” you look into his eyes, his teary eyes. “But every- thing- h- hurts,” you whisper. He gently strokes a strand of hair from your forehead.
“I know,” he whispers. “Just save your energy. Just stay alive for me. We need to go home and finish that game of chess, so you need to keep those eyes open for me. I'm begging you,” a tear falls down his cheek, you use everything in you to reach up and wipe it away. You glance at your dad and he nods. You use everything left to pull yourself up, kissing Spencer gently , just like your first kiss.
Your and Spencer's first kiss was in the rain, it was romantic, he had walked you home from work, it had started raining and you gave up on trying to shield yourself. You stood there, looking at each other, before leaning in, kissing softly.
Now you kiss him for what feels like the last time, your breaths are more shallow, your condition getting worse. When you pull back, EMTs are rushing to you with a stretcher, Spence gets in the ambulance with you. He stands in the observation deck as they perform surgery, unable to wash your blood off his hands. But he breaks down at the flatline coming from the operation room, walking out to Rossi who goes pale, refusing to accept that his pumpkin is dead. Spencer is sobbing on Derek.
Rossi is frozen in horror, at the realization, his pumpkin spent her last moments with the man she truly loved, with the man that she wanted to marry, with the man she was ready to marry. That her last man was the best one she could have ever chosen. Rossi hugs Spencer whispering, “Thank you, not for dating her, but for saving her. She would have been alone without you, she would have died without knowing there was a man out there for her, and it was you. So thank you for letting her know what true love is,” Spencer breaks down harder, sobbing until he can't anymore, crying until his body refuses to let him cry another drop.
Spencer just whispers, “I should have stayed so we could have finished our chess match… she was winning…”
