Tensions are high as the team watches you and Hotch storm into his office.
The case itself had been one where there were close calls, and it had seemed that no matter what you were always twenty steps behind.
But then, Spencer had gotten abducted and you had gotten an idea and had acted on it before Hotch could react and now this is the aftermath.
Spencer nibbles on his thumb when the door slams shut, shoulders bunched to his ears because he knows this is partially his fault.
“This isn’t your fault, kid.” Derek says quietly, but Spencer can hear your raised voices through the door and he knows it kind of is.
“You’re so fucking reckless,” Hotch starts and you roll your eyes.
Objectively, he’s right, but in the situation any moment spent talking the plan through might’ve landed you guys at the hospital with Spencer on a gurney and a white sheet over his body.
“You can call it whatever the fuck you want Aaron. I was not waiting around while god knows what happened to Spencer.”
You and Spencer have been friends since you first came into the BAU, being the closest in age and all that. You’re practically siblings at this point, so the second you’d heard he’d been taken you’d lost it.
There was no way you were going to let him die, Aaron has to understand that.
He slams his hand down on his desk and it makes you flinch but you’re not backing down.
“That was not just your call to make. You could’ve very well ensured his death by barging in there.”
You roll your eyes, anyone else would’ve done the same thing if they had the thought half a second earlier than you did.
You couldn’t stay out there hoping to talk a violent, mentally ill woman going through some sort of psychosis down while she had Spencer chained to a beam with a gun to his temple.
“If this were anyone else, you wouldn’t be riding them half as hard and you know it.” you shrug as you speak. “You’re only acting like this, because of what nearly happened before we got the call about this case.”
You don’t stop when you spot the tick in his jaw. You and Aaron had almost kissed, had confessed this feeling, not love yet but much more than just like, to each other ten minutes before you’d gotten the call about the case.
“I couldn’t let Spencer die, anymore than I could let anything happen to any of you. I won’t apologise for that.”
He sighs, “Then you’re on probation. Two weeks no field work, you can help Penelope from here.”
You laugh but it’s humourless. “For doing my job? Fuck you Hotch.”
You turn to his door, ready to let yourself out. “You could’ve died.” he whispers and you sigh, pressing your forehead into the hard wood of his door.
“I could die any time we’re out in the field. I'm a Supervisory Special Agent, just like you.”
“No you’re not. You’re too reckless and you’re rash, you run into things head first without thinking it through.”
You grit your teeth, “And if it was me instead of Spencer she took, wouldn’t you have done the same thing?”
When he can’t answer you shake your head, “Get over yourself, Aaron. I’m sorry, but I’d do it again. For Spencer, for JJ, for any of you, I’d do it again.”
You open the door then, stomping down the stairs and into the bullpen.
When you spot Spencer, he’s gnawing away at his other hand.
“I’m so fucking happy you’re okay, Spence.”
He pulls you into him, hugging you close to him.
“I’m sorry you got in trouble with Hotch.”
You wave him off, “I’m on probation, no field work for two weeks. But the main thing is you’re alive.”
Spencer looks up, eyes falling to Hotch’s window, finding his unit chief staring at you with a hand to his chest, rubbing it harshly.
“I really think he was just worried.”
You pull away, holding his face like you’re reassuring yourself that he’s here. “So was I.”
