Let’s talk about After the Flood, the Castlevania fic I wrote in a depressive funk! This serves as a sort of tree ring to my mental state - I was feeling very misanthropic at the time, so I wrote about a world without humans. I love post-apocalyptic stories and the imagery of just two people being left behind and they have to make something out of the empty world. 

In early drafts of this story, Isaac was a LOT meaner. I don’t think that it was necessarily more or less IC for me to tone it down (I think both work fine), but I had to make Isaac nicer to Hector to make the rest of the fic make sense. So I had to tone down a lot of Isaac’s zingers and make him more curious than contemptuous of Hector. I think there’s an argument to be made that Isaac is a little fond of Hector in the show, too. 

Now, to unpack the last line: 

“This is how it should be,” Isaac said. “If the world is to be emptied, I want love to remain.”

Isaac is being a little oblique here. I’m not sure what I expected readers to get out of it? But I also wasn’t sure how I wanted to end the fic, other than on a melancholy note. I figured whatever readers built up would probably be fine. 

But what did *I* intend? Isaac doesn’t love Hector, but he might come to one day, and he WANTS to. Isaac’s lonely for other humans, though he doesn’t project it like Hector does. If Isaac and Hector fell in love, that would mean that the world ended with love, and not the awkward distance that they have going on.

4. Do you think your style has changed over time? How so?

I know I wrote this Q myself but golly it’s difficult to answer. I do think my style has changed a lot since I started. I think that I’ve reached a point where I’m very consistent from fic to fic. I’d say my style started out very influenced by litfic, particularly the kind you see in literary magazines, but also by anonymous kinkmemes which were just for writing a lot of smut? I’d say now my work is much more... Hmm. It’s very focused on character and driving towards a central plot point rather than a general mood. 

11. What kind of relationships are you most interested in writing?

Answered previously, but for an extra, I like villain/villain. 

14. You’re applying for the fanfic writer of the year award. What five fanfics do you put in your portfolio?
