create whats waiting for you
i have posted before that i think you are an artist before you ever make a painting or song or book. i understand it is a unique perspective and that is okay, but i am thinking on it again. specifically on how it relates to my perspective on grief and death
when i answer 'what makes you a creator?' with 'you are a creator before you ever start' it makes some folks upset or make fun of chuck. that is okay it is a big philosophical swing, but i think best way to explain would be to actually look at TIME ITSELF. specifically question: what is the present?
our perception is always a memory, a split second one from the 'now', so i am just as much present here as i am myself at 4, or 14, or 24 or 94. the dr manhattan meme is actually true, and we are all just bound by a focus on the 'present.' and guess what, the creative act STARTS when existence does
anyway, i started believing this about ART when i had a realization about DEATH. when someone we love trots to the next timeline, we become obsessed with their final moments as if they have more weight. if someone dies in a tragic way, we kind of let that start to define them. this bothers me
because once they are gone they are in EVERY moment. there is no reason that THE END, this tiny sliver of existence that is barely visible within the whole pie, should be worth more than all the love and joy on the way. when we are gone we are every moment, and when we are here we are every moment
tonight i just trotted back from seeing a family member who is about to leave this timeline. probably last time i will see them, and as i was in their room i was thankful i did not need to look around and tell myself 'this is the last time, i better appreciate this place', because i already DID
this final visit was also the first visit, and the second, and the twenty fourth. the are all the same, and when you live with gratitude for the small moments you ALREADY APPRECIATE THEM. you do not need to prove anything at the end. there is not catchup. i believe deeply that this is true
and this is another reason why i think ARTISTS are valid whether they have started or not. their piece is already out there in the unknown. we are all here right now reading these words, and we are also all on the next timeline looking back. hope this inspires you to create whats waiting for you
all media today is writers frantically trying to make their work idiotproof and then the audience frantically trying to make themselves better idiots
my first word was dada. yes like the art movement i was a precocious child
Turin tearless turning suddenly on the corse cast him, and kissed the mouth cold and open, and closed the eyes.
Yes, Beleg's eyes are BIG and OPEN and SURPRISED because ... you know ... and his hair is still long and luxurious even though he never did anything with it, while Turin is a little rat boy. A rat boy who really fucked it up THIS TIME. shoutout to @nisiedrawsstuff for inspiring me to draw this!!!
if you are a person who comments your reactions on every single chapter of a multi-chapter fic, please know the author FUCKING CHERISHES YOU
sketchtober 21 - today i am tired
ten favorite lines
so i'm sneaking this from @edgeoflight - writing down ten of my favorite lines from my ten longest fics. i am so sorry but i am probably not picking my actual favorite line out of a 109k fic i finished in 2023 but i am going to make a valiant effort to like, find a really good one. also these are like, paragraphs or full sections of dialogue because some really good lines need context!!!

ahem hem IN ORDER OF LENGTH FROM LONGEST TO SHORTEST:
After getting Fingon to drink a generous glass of wine, it was decided that croquet would be a less belligerent use of everyone’s time.
My darling Yukers passed in January 2022 at age 16, so of course I had to get another cat. That cat was Claudia, the most sweetest tabby who will never let me draw without paying pet tribute first.
I took up drawing while I went eight rough months without writing because I needed some sort of creative outlet. I am uniquely terrible at it, but find it fun nonetheless.
WE DID IT WE HAVE OVER TWENTY WITCH -KING MIRIEL FANFICS
Actually there are now 27 witch king fics because, ironically, the first fic I wrote didn't have the tag because it would've been a spoiler
Tolkien Fanfiction Survey, 3rd Edition
Do you read or write fanfiction based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien or a Tolkien media adaptation like the film trilogies or Rings of Power series? If so, we'd love to hear from you!
The Tolkien Fanfiction Survey first ran in 2015 and has run every five years since. We are excited to introduce the third edition, which will give us insight into how the fandom has changed across the last decade!
What is it like to participate?
If you choose to participate, we will collect basic demographic information and ask you about your beliefs and habits regarding reading and/or writing Tolkien-based fanfiction. Most questions are multiple choice, but there is also a space on each page where you can elaborate on any of your answers if you want to share more information with us. You can skip any question you don't want to answer and quit the survey at any time.
The survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete.
Who can participate?
Participants must be 18 years or older.
We want to hear from both readers and writers of Tolkien-based fanfiction.
All levels of experience and involvement with Tolkien are welcome.
Readers and writers of fic based on Jackson's film trilogies, The Rings of Power, and other Tolkien-derived media are welcome as well.
If you read and/or wrote Tolkien-based fanfiction in the past but don't any longer, we still want to hear from you!
Who are you and what do you plan to do with the results?
We are Dawn "Felagund" Walls-Thumma and Maria K. Alberto, and we are both readers and writers of Tolkien fanfiction! Dawn is an independent scholar in Tolkien and fan studies, and Maria is an assistant professor at Richland Community College.
We hope this survey will help us to better understand how our fandom interacts with fanfiction, the texts and adaptations, and one another as fellow readers and writers. We will aggregate survey responses to look for trends and changes across the past decade of survey results. This data will be used in conference presentations, papers, and articles about Tolkien fandom and Tolkien-based fanfiction, but we will also share our data and findings in fandom spaces. We will also make data available to other researchers who want to do similar research.
If you have questions or concerns about this survey, you can contact either of us: Dawn Walls-Thumma at [email protected] or Maria K. Alberto at [email protected].

Please signal boost this survey to other Tolkien communities.
