Kent State - "2814"
Lo-fi shoegazey garage rock from Los Angeles, CA.
For fans of: Odonis Odonis, The Shirks, Slices, Spider Fever, Broken Water, Useless Eaters, Ovlov.
Listen to this when you're: drinking with friends (or alone–I think it's good drinking music), wanting some psychedelic rock with fuzz that's thick enough to require a machete.

This song popped up on shuffle from my Spotify favorites playlist last night on the way home from Tulsa and I had to share. :)
From the album, The Wrong Side of History. Released 2013.
supremely overlooked rock'n'roll album from last year, absolutely killer. h/t to Jeremy Larson for encouraging me to throw this on the turntable while I made dinner.

Spider Fever, "Don't Let Deth Get In The Way"
Merry Christmas, Spider
There was a bus driver at my school who -- to the best of my knowledge -- was actually named Spider. Everyone called him Spider and he didn't have any visible tattoos of a spider on his neck or hand, so Spider could very have been his government name. All of us were too afraid to ask.
Spider was the bus driver who would always play the rock radio station. The other bus drivers would play Z-104 the pop station, but Spider would play LAZER 103 or Solid Rock 94.1 WJJO. Not just play, crank. I'm pretty sure this violated some bus driver code of conduct.
In the back of Spider's bus in 3rd was the first time I remember hearing Alice In Chains "The Rooster" and Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun". I only knew how to perform enjoying them and not actually enjoy them (i.e. bang my head and then look around and giggle) but it felt so cool -- like I was a person on TV enjoying these songs! I was too afraid to talk to Spider because Spider had greasy tendrils and underneath his jacket he, yes, was probably covered in tattoos and odds are one of them was a spider.
I'm pretty sure Spider was fired. The rumor mill of the 3rd grade class assumed it was because Spider drank. Spider would be always be extra garrulous to every kid coming onto the bus and sometime's he'd sing along to Stone Temple Pilots and Monster Magnet while he drove.
Three of my favorite rock songs that came out this year were by bands with the name Spider in the name, so this one's for you, dude. Thanks for showing me how to enjoy White Zombie at 7:15 a.m.
