I love brewing kombucha, making yogurt, baking stuff with yeast (I’ve yet to acquire a sourdough starter), growing oyster mushrooms, keeping a ginger bug, etc!!! it’s so much easier and cheaper than you’d think! you don’t need fancy equipment for any of those things, as long as you’ve got a kitchen and your home isn’t uncomfortably cold. you take a little bit of starter bacteria/fungi, keep it safe and warm, feed it what it likes to eat, and grow it infinitely, forever making you tasty foods! it’s kinda like a weird pet. it’s also like having a spider plant: you can take a “baby” portion from the mother to give to your friends, so they can grow their own.
it’s especially convenient for anyone struggling with poor gut health, like me. I caught covid in october, and things have been dire ever since. probiotics have helped a lot. I started drinking much more kombucha, almost daily. that shit’s expensive! it’s way cheaper to brew it myself.
