honestly saying spike would be racist is such a trip on this site. you never know what racist shit fans will say to try and prove he’s not racist. previously it was the “imagine spike doing nikki’s cornrows!!!” this time it is - i kid you not - “i don’t get how spike could be racist? he literally murdered people of color?? if he was racist he’d only murder white people.”

the Buffy–Spike pairing complicates these gender identifications, because here the abuser is female. However, this is not a simple gender inversion – Buffy as masculine and Spike as feminine – for Spike performs both masculinity and femininity (as does Buffy). Indeed, both characters traverse gender boundaries, Buffy adopts the traditional masculine role of initiating sex, she uses Spike for sex and does not show him love, whereas Spike is the loving partner whose emotional needs are not met. Spike’s feminization also calls into question Buffy’s heterosexuality because Spike occupies a female position and is in love with a female character – an expression of lesbian desire. Further, Spike is being abused by Buffy, which undermines any systematically progressive reading of this pairing, and moreover, Buffy’s self-loathing at her attraction to Spike can be read as self-directed homophobia.

this honestly feels like something i could find on this hellsite but no this was in an academic article published in the european journal of cultural studies. 

anyways this is still without a doubt the worst buffy take i have ever read and that includes every “seeing red isn’t spike’s fault” that’s ever been sent to me. this take has it all. saying buffy abused spike. portraying spike as the victim. AND somehow making the astronomical leap to call them a gay couple and buffy a self hating homophobe. incredible. truly incredible.

joss whedon’s done a lot of shitty things but at least spike wasn’t a wealthy man from louisiana born in 1850. at least we’ll never have to see with our own two eyes what side of the civil war spike stans think he would have fought on if he’d been old enough to serve. and that’s why i thank god on this day.
