Ah, the awkward middle years of western anime styles. You know, I actually had that one Scholastic How to Draw Manga book that we all like to cringe about now...

Ah, the awkward middle years of western anime styles. You know, I actually had that one Scholastic How to Draw Manga book that we all like to cringe about now...
Isn’t it weird how a load of early PS1 games had this... FRUSTRATING THING... of making a whole cast of distinctive characters in some unique art style and then NONE OF THEM ARE ANYTHING
Both of these (Spin Jam and Firebugs) were really bad bargain basement style games that were just like.. basic genre. Spin Jam had a cool sort of different gzmeplay for a match 3 puzzle on a rotating disc plane, and Firebugs had the gimmick of being able to drive upside down on the walls with super future racing cars. But still they were just A Puzzle Game and A Racing Game. Just basic single player and multiplayer, that’s it. Only replayability is scores.
AT NO POINT IS THERE ANY STORY WITH THE DAMN CHARACTERS!!! Why even make such cool characters then?? Who are any of these people! I know nothing but their names! At least they had mildly different car stats in Firebugs, in Spin Jam there’s literally no difference except the visuals. GAHHH!! And they both had some sort of ‘interdimensional tournement where you win one wish and everyone coming here has their own reasons” type premise.. according to the manual at least. Like seriously they could have been decent rpgs! Puzzle rpg and like.. racing game that has at least story cutscenes between levels or something. SOMETHING!!
Why am I forever cursed to never know who the fuck these people are. Why must these cool designs be wasted!! Seriously, Spin Jam has a merman in a diver’s suit but his victory animation is him pulling his damn head off and the head and body celebrate separately?! Like.. WHAT THE FUCK IS THE STORY BEHIND THAT!!!!!!!!! Is this a ghost merman what the fuck, god damn you man for not using these characters for anything actually character related! WHO IS THE GHOST MERMAN. WAS HE JUST CREATED TO SCARE CHILDREN. COS IT WORKED.
curses....
In the year 2000 PlayStation puzzle game Spin Jam, character designs are split into two distinct face styles. Characters like Lemon Drop, Poppy, Wigsey, Aqualad, BabyBot, and Innit have anime-inspired faces, while Nips, Booger, Gilly, and the villain Moolamb feature classic cartoon faces.
The cast of characters and their specific face styles are categorized as follows:
Anime-Inspired Characters
These characters feature an Anime-Inspired Design:
Lemon Drop: Often depicted as a citrus-themed, anime-style girl.
Poppy: A bright character designed with colorful, large eyes typical of anime and manga.
Wigsey: A robotic character with anime styling, despite being a cyborg.
Aqualad: Styled as an anime boy with prominent features.
BabyBot: A robotic character designed in an anime aesthetic.
Innit: A mysterious butterfly-like anime schoolgirl.
Cartoon Face Characters
These characters and bosses have classic cartoon/mascot faces:
Nips: Features a more traditional cartoon-style face.
Booger: A classic, bouncy cartoon rabbit.
Gilly: Designed with a vibrant, exaggerated cartoon look.
Moolamb: The game's primary antagonist, featuring a cartoonish face on an unusual body.
