Okay so hear me out. BG3, Modern AU. We're talking some Bloodweave.
Gale is a PhD student who falls for Astarion, who is an undergrad about to graduate this year. Astarion is being blackmailed by Cazador (would have to flesh out who he is in this lol) and in order to pay him, he usually finds strangers at the bar and flirts with them to get them to take him back to their place, where he waits until they fall asleep and robs them. He's done this to some professors, who are basically unable to report it without admitting to sleeping with a student. That was his plan with Gale, but when it comes time he just can't do it. He tries to avoid Gale, but Gale is a hopeless romantic and won't give up so easily, and Astarion can't bring himself to fully break things off.
