I have a story brewing in my head. But I have a bit of imposter syndrome/everyone has already written anything good and I couldn't possibly add to it.
How do you start? How do you get the words down without thinking that it's pointless? How do you make space for feeling like you're actually contributing to the state of art in the world?
Hello my friend!
What a good question! My writing process usually goes like this:
I hear a song on one of my OTP playlists and my mind goes 'What is the story here?' and then I listen to that one song on repeat and try to formulate a story based on the lyrics/mood (That's what all my fics are named after songs!)
Sometimes, what comes out isn't what I want. Sometimes, the words I write feel forced or meh. Sometimes, I feel like 'this is the same as x,y,z story.'
I think that's such a huge author mood, we all go through that from time to time. So how do you get past it?
Honestly? Just write! Write a stream of consciousness, write a story you think is the same as 100 before, write notes on your phone when you have a good idea, write lines of dialogue that don't have a story yet. Just write. Keep writing. Don't convince yourself that it's 'bad' or 'unimportant' simply write. Anything at all.
This will get those good creative brain synapses firing! Even if you write one paragraph and get stuck, give yourself time. Writing doesn't always happen in one sitting. There's no rush!
Also, let me be very clear. There's no such thing as 'bad' writing. All writing is important! And in fandom, even more so. There will AWLAYS be someone out there who reads your work and goes 'GOD I LOVE THIS!' no matter what you think about it.
Best wishes, my love! I love you. I'm proud of you. I'm here!
