Suchomimus no more?
A recent study published a week or so ago has highlighted the neuromuscular system found in the snouts of Spinosaurids and highlights their possible functions, but it also managed to do something that no one on the internet expected: By suggesting that the genus name of Suchomimus tenerensis, which was described in 1998, should be dropped in favor of that of “Cristatusaurus” which was described from much more fragmentary remains, as the latter name came first according to the rules of the ICZN. If that turns out to be true, it would mean that the former name may turn out to be dubious and treated as a synonym of the latter, and that has not stopped many vocal corners of social media to lament the “death” of Suchomimus and call for more scientific studies to prove its validity. And with the internet becoming increasingly opinionated about dinosaurs these days, it seems that a flame war has already started between factions who support the recent study’s decisions and those who don’t, but only time will tell if either side wins in the near future…but what are your thoughts about this matter?
