I really miss when spirals were a much bigger component of skating. Also, one of my favorite costumes in history!

I was looking at protocols for past programs and I found that Yuna's spirals and spins would attain the same level and GOE as Mao. I'm stumped since Yuna's spins and spirals were so clunky in comparison. What do you think?

Many people have said that. 

But it wasn’t just Yuna, other female skaters whose spirals weren’t anything special would score a level 4 along with good GOE’s. 

To be honest, I don’t think the element was that difficult. I can say that as an amateur skater. (Tough at times I miss spiral sequences, I have to remind myself that good spirals were rare compared to the same old boring holds we saw. So in away I’m glad they’re gone). Although, I’m sure the ISU could have come up with a way to encourage more innovative positions. 

This was the criteria for a level 4 spiral:  

2 of the following Features required for Level 2, 3 for Level 3, 4 for Level 4 

 A difficult variation of position 

 A difficult variation of position on a different foot significantly different from the 1st variation 

 Change of edge in a spiral 

Unsupported change of free leg position or direction of skating maintaining the spiral (3 seconds hold before and after the change) 

Free leg in a total split position, one or both arms hold possible 

Holding spiral position (without any interruption) for 6 or more seconds without changes in position/variation

And the GOE’s were awarded based on these criteria:

Spiral Sequence GOE Positive Guidlines - Judges  2 bullets   for + 1;         4 bullets for + 2;         6 or more bullets for + 3;  

good flow, energy and execution

good speed during sequence

good body line and full extension -arguable

minimal delay between spiral positions

good flexibility -arguable

creativity and originality

ability to attain positions and variations quickly and effortlessly

element matched to the musical structure

I’ve highlighted those which Yuna could have achieved regularly.

I agree, Mao’s spirals were one of the best during that time and better than Yuna’s, but what made us love them weren’t all that the judges were paying attention to.
