More dead Marsh Colony ancestors: Hardywillow, Egretflight, and Morningshine!
Hardywillow (Ranger) and Egretflight (Envoy) are mates, and had Whitefire and Hawkshell. Morningshine (Envoy) is Egretflight's sister, and unfortunately died giving birth to Sunfire. Hawkshell adopted her baby cousin as her own son after Morningshine's passing.
Dead cats!
Cats that never appear in the story but are parents to living characters. This is Copperfang and Ochremantis, parents of Mudtrail and Halfmask of Marsh Colony.
Copperfang was a Marsh Colony Mentor and Ochre was a Keeper. They were both Rangers before Captain Hawkshell and Captain Elmtail made peace between Marsh and Oak Colony, and they bare the scars from living in such a tumultuous time.
Marsh Colony dead cat: Starrybog!
Herbalist and mother of Shrewbelly
Dead Marsh Colony gal: Lightningtoe
A Mentor and mother of Leafstorm.
This dead ancestor of Marsh Colony is Ruddywhisker! Herbalist and mother of Starkpath! She got her scars fighting a Gar for herbs.
How strong are Captains compared to normal rangers?
I’m mostly asking because I’m curious how difficult it would be to lie to the colony about getting your spirits blessing dream.
Is it easy to tell if a cat is lying based on their strength? Or is it impossible to tell without spirit intervention?
I looooved the first book btw - read most of it in one night.
Thanks! <3
They are, for the most part, still just normal cats. In their day-to-day life, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
In a tense situation or in the heat of battle, the spirits pledged to the Captain do offer their strength, speed, endurance, and so on. And how much that effects the Captain is closely tied to the Captain's own ability to channel the spirit's energy.
(Spoilers for Shifting Roots) Death Magic is automatically granted to a cat that becomes Captain, but that doesn't automatically make them good or even open to using it, and some cats definitely are more magically attuned to it than others (even unknowingly).
the spirits beyond symbol in the field family tree is so pretty! can we see it closer up? and maybe the spirits after too?
Here we go! On the left we have the symbol of the Spirits Beyond, and on the right is the symbol for 'Unknown' cats, whether they are literally unknown or their appearance is a mystery.
The Spirits to Come don't have an emblem as they are not actual spirits/souls. Just a concept.
