Made a jig today, first time in awhile. Just a simple hexagon spline jig. These hexagon shelves I think should have some more support on what I’d think are weak joints. Especially cut on a mitre saw. (2/3) After the slots have been cut into the corners of the frame using the Lamello machine, Ralph paints them with water soluble glue (top image) and the splines are inserted and pushes in using a hand tool (bottom). (1/3) Last week, we posted about joining a frame. After the four sides of a frame have been joined, we usually spline the corners. Splines are small strips of wood that are embedded into the corners of a frame, making a very strong joint. We only use splines -- not nails or brads -- in our joinery. The joined frame is placed in our spline jig (upside down as the face/front of the frame can withstand the most intense clamp pressure). Here, Ralph Fleming uses the jig and a Lamello biscuit joiner to make two slots for splines in a joined frame (top and bottom right). The Lamello machine (bottom left) is a wonderful tool that was invented by a Swiss woodworker in the 1950s; we were early adopters of using it for frame joinery in the 70s. #woodworking #splines #Lamello #biscuitjoiner #joinery #woodshop #customframing #splinejig #jig #biscuits #barkframeworks
