Outline for Gods and Monsters 14.02
I’ve been fighting a friggin’ apocalypse for fifteen years, my FBI might be a little rusty.
14x02 - Gods and Monsters
“He just... he just left.” | SPN 14.02
Every time Sam flinches at a loud noise my heart breaks a little bit more
I was just rereading my own post and screamed out loud, because I put something together. Castiel’s understanding of the Black Snake and the Egg parable in 14.14:
Cas: You’re keeping the snake? Jack: Yeah. Rowena said that the gorgons can see people’s fate. And, Noah said that he could see me. That... that story. Cas: The story about the chicken and the snake was just... he was... stalling. Jack: What does it mean? Cas: Well, it was a story about greed, mostly. But I guess it’s also... it’s also about being willing to give up the thing you love in order to kill the thing you hate. Jack: He said that he didn’t know if I was the chicken or the snake. Does that--
And they’re interrupted by Dean screaming and things banging, and rush to see what’s wrong.
I want to write a little bit about this scene for its own sake before I tell y’all why I was screaming.
Cas first says that the story was about greed, but that’s only when viewed from the point of view of the snake, right? The snake was motivated to eat all the eggs because he was greedy and hungry, returning over and over and eating more eggs each time until there were none left.
But the story is also about being willing to give up the thing you love in order to kill the thing you hate. From the point of view of the chickens, they sacrificed their last precious egg, boiling it themselves because they knew it was doomed anyway, as the snake would inevitably return to eat it the next day. So they destroyed the egg themselves knowing that at least when the snake ate it, the snake would die and they and all their future eggs would be safe, even if this particular egg was doomed.
But what about the point of view of the EGG? From the POV of the egg, it was destined to be consumed either way, you know?
But back to my point now... This rang an alarm bell as I was rereading this post:
http://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/183308093655/can-someone-please-explain-to-me-why-cas-is-acting
and specifically THIS LINE from that post:
I mean, it was his conversation with Jack that forced him to confront the fact that he was not willing to kill Dean (the thing he loves) just to kill Michael (the thing he hates), way back in 14.02.
And I realized this pairing of things goes far deeper for Cas, into territory that also dredges up his own personal bargain he made for Jack’s life with the Empty, all the way back to Cas’s original meeting with The Shadow back in 13.04 and the dagger made of words the Entity thrust at Cas:
Cosmic Entity: I have tiptoed through all your little tulips. Your memories, your little feelings, yes. I know what you hate. I know who you love, what you fear. There is nothing for you back there. No. Here. Let me show you.
What he hates, who he loves, and what he fears.
And here we have it all again, presented from a new angle out past the point where Cas has dealt away his own life, dooming himself to either unhappiness or else oblivion. I mean, talk about What He Fears, right? He’s actively living it, courtesy of the Shadow.
It’s also abundantly clear that “who he loves” is being presented as “Dean,” at least indirectly, since it was Jack and Cas’s mutual concern for Dean in his current unconscious state that was the reason for this entire conversation in the first place.
So... *commences screaming again*
Whelp
Nick: *Snaps like Lucifer*
Cas: *OH FUCK OH FUCK*
Me: Well shit
I need to point something out.
#1: we all know Rich is an awesome director and needs all the awards.
#2: WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL IS THE DEAL WITH THIS WEIRD SIGNET RING?!?!?
Just about every time we see Michael!Dean in 14x02, he’s got this posh af ring on his right pinky. It’s there in almost every single scene.
Like when he’s sipping 100 year old cognac:
Or when he’s fixing his bow tie:
Or even after he punches the mirror
Just look. It’s right in the middle of each shot. What is the significance? This is Rich directing, so it obviously means SOMETHING!
But look at this scene where it is most obviously MISSING; the Dean reveal.
Is it a hint? What does it mean? Just another layer to the confusion I guess.
Conspiracy theory : What if they made The Premiere bad on purpose so the buckleming episode coming after can look good ?!
