Episode 157 - 8.08 Hunteri Heroici

As mentioned in last week's episode, I won't be doing weekly podcasts for the foreseeable future. Both until my personal life is less chaotic, and until I'm able to find another hosting service. I don't want to stop doing occasional deep dives into an episode when I have the time, so I will at least be continuing occasional updates in this written format!

This is the last one that I already had done and ready to go, and I can't say for sure when I will have time to do the next one, but I have every intention to continue this series. I've been doing this for over three years now, though, with I believe only one other break of a few weeks. So I'm just a wee bit burnt out on it, as well. I feel like this is an excellent episode to take a rest on for a while.

8x08 - Hunteri Heroici

lol i think the absolute most HILARIOUS thing to come out of the revelations of 15.17 and 15.18 is how it puts the romantic burden in s8 almost entirely on Dean’s shoulders. In Purgatory, sure, it falls on both of them pretty equally, in different ways. But post-Purgatory? While Cas is being controlled by Heaven? and fairly coolly informing Dean that he never intended to leave Purgatory with him, and he chose to stay behind even if the portal would’ve worked for him... well, ow.

And we feel Castiel’s depression arc deepen that will eventually end with the Empty, and just like in s7 there’s a painfully long arc of episodes where Cas is just... absent, and we (and Dean) have no idea what’s become of him. We see moment of Cas breaking through (notably in 8.08 where he and Dean have a partial conversation and Cas shows us an emotional reaction that leaves Dean taken aback), but we won’t truly see Cas with his own full agency back until after he falls and becomes human.

Dean himself, through the vast majority of this season, is the one carrying the destiel ball all on his own. How ANYONE can deny that Dean loves Cas just as much as Cas loves him really hasn’t been paying attention.

(yeah, sorry, s8 truther here... it’s not the romantic love fest nostalgia would lead you to believe... it’s painfully one-sided on Dean’s behalf, and is probably the number one reason why he has never felt like he ever had a chance to get Cas to a) stay with him, and b) reciprocate the love he feels for him, and why he essentially gave up even trying... so... his words on the matter are even more long overdue than Cas’s were in 15.18...)
