the beginning of spn eighth season is hilarious, trust me. Sam's thing with benny was personal. I thought about it and it didn't make sense, except for one thing: he was incredibly jealous, and he didn't have peace until dean "broke up" with benny, haha (well, sort of, he even mentioned it at the end of the season, that son of a bitch is so funny, i love him)

dean would look at him every time he mentioned benny and practically roll his eyes, "again? dude, i didn't cheat on you with him'', yeah, right, sam doesn't believe it. He had the chance to go off with amelia, and dean let him go, but I think as soon as he found out dean broke up with benny he thought, "screw it, i got what i wanted" lmao
