“whatcha thinking about, angel?” dean asked, sliding into the seat across from cas at the kitchen table, pleased now that he’d gotten some food in the oven.

“nothing of import,” cas said vaguely, shifting his eyes away from dean.

“uh uh,” dean said, knocking cas’ knee underneath the table. “you don’t get to do that. penny for your thoughts.”

cocking his head, cas squinted at dean before shaking his head with a huff. “why would I want a penny?”

dean snorted, rolling his eyes before knocking at cas’ knee again. “it’s an expression. just means tell me what you’re thinking about.”

frowning, cas turned away. “I told you, it’s not of import.”

when cas darted his eyes briefly over to dean again, he could see the indecision bouncing around on dean’s face; torn between pushing for details or letting go and allowing cas to slip away. and somehow, that was worse. worse than admitting the thoughts that had been consuming cas’ mind.

“you. I was thinking about you,” cas admitted, the words startling on his tongue.

dean’s expression morphed again, and a new set of indecision flickered across his face. hope. skepticism. and yet, a glimmer of something recognized, like a sense of understanding.

and then dean was reaching into his pocket, pulling out two pennies. he pushed both over the metal table towards cas. a penny for cas’ thoughts, and another penny for….

“ask me,” dean murmured, the words filling the space between them.

cas picked up the penny, twisting it between his fingers over and over again, before slowly placing it back down and gently sliding back across the table towards dean.

“penny for your thoughts.”

dean picked up the penny and smiled.
