dean drinks root beer with jack after he gets sober. everyone else has a beer when they’re hanging out (dean insists) but dean and jack have their root beers. dean calls them the “cool kidz” and clinks his bottle against jack’s. his son thinks it’s so fun! he wants to be just like his dad and he is!! they’re the cool kids!!

cannot stop thinking about dean stops drinking at the beginning of season 15

like the whole season arc is about liberating yourself from the narrative, choosing free will. and in this sense, dean decides its time to stop drinking, he is healing, he is looking to the future because for the first time he sees a life ahead of him

and as much as it is about embracing the future, its also about distancing yourself from the past. finally he is rejecting his fathers maladaptive coping mechanisms and his fathers shitty thought processes

and i think sobriety would be a really interesting tenet of his coming out…… he finally is looking to the future, he is rejecting his fathers homophobia, he stops hating himself and is working through his shame and fear in healthier ways

plus i think then they could work with this thing where dean meets some people in a church basement once a week, and its about dean having this support network completely separate from his supernatural life. like the people there have no idea about his day job, they just know him as dean, hes got two kids at home and is trying to repair his relationship with his exhusband

and then that scene in 15x19 where deans grieving cas and fell asleep on a bottle of something, i mean how much more powerful would it have been if he’d been staring at the bottle on the table, and sam comes in and is like “dean ohmygod youre drinking!“ and deans like “no.... cas is gone, chucks on the run and everyone’s dead, but i am not drinking“

and then in the finale episode when cas dean jack, eileen and sam are hanging out having dinner in the bunker, we get a glimpse of deans 1 year sober chip on a counter in the kitchen. it’s a symbol of deans commitment to doing better

like its about dean wanting to do better, for cas and jack and sam, wanting to be better and he doesnt want to die anymore. he wants to live and he wants to live well and he has to be sober for that. finale episode ends with them eating dinner and toasting a new era with a bottle of sparkling cider
